Most multivitamins contain vitamin E, as do most antioxidant formulas. But if you're like me, you want to know which foods have the best supplies. Vegetable oils rank first, followed by nuts, then whole grains and poppy and sesame seeds. Among fruits and vegetables, the top sources include bell peppers, tomatoes, currants, blueberries, peaches, and plums (prunes). More Wisdom from the Garden called atopic dermatitis or eczema) or by contact with something that irritates your skin (such as poison ivy, oak, or sumac).
Over the course of a year, the people taking the multivitamins reported fewer days of illness. Blood tests showed that they had more robust immune systems. Of course, this study caught the attention of the supplement industry, which used it to promote their products. I don't have any problem with that. As I've discussed elsewhere in this book, moderate supplementation makes sense. But I'm convinced that part of the reason the elderly participants responded so well to the multivitamin is that they weren't eating properly to begin with.

A study conducted at the State University of New York at Stony Brook found that people who consumed plenty of vitamins either by eating fruits and vegetables or by taking multivitamins were 37 percent less likely to have cataracts. The researchers concluded that the antioxidants in fresh produce and/or vitamins have a strong protective effect against cataracts. Canadian researchers at the University of Western Ontario in London, studied 175 middle-aged people with cataracts and 175 matched controls who did not have the disorder.

Broad-spectrum multivitamins and Multiminerals. Free radicals damage our DNA, so foods, vitamins, and herbs that neutralize free radicals are important preventive agents. There are numerous studies on the protective effects of antioxidants, so these nutrients are essential in any cancer prevention program, although there has been less research than one would imagine for many common nutrients. For the rest, however, the evidence is solid. For example, we know that selenium, at a dose of 200 meg per day, reduces prostate cancer rates by two-thirds. Cellular Antioxidants.

Supplementation should include high-potency multivitamins and minerals, especially the B complex. Injections of the B complex and vitamin B12, in my experience, have at times brought about dramatic improvement. The minerals selenium and zinc especially are important as potent antioxidants. Zinc apparently helps stop amyloid plaque formation, which is related to zinc deficiency. Other antioxidants to protect the brain should include vitamin C (2,000 to 6,000 milligrams in divided doses daily), beta-carotene, and vitamin E (400 to 800 I.U.s daily).

Our best bet seemed to be a good attitude (difficult when surrounded by fear and misinformation) coupled with months of garlic (crushed in a teaspoon with honey), echinacea tinctures, vitamin C, and multivitamins. Whooping cough taught us temperance and patience. The illness is very long and not much fun to listen to or stay up all night with, but it was not life-threatening for anyone in our community. It's an illness to be avoided, but I'm glad we went through it. If the disease is detected early enough, a young child can pass through the illness safely.

A recent study carried out at the Harvard Medical School has shown that long-term use of multivitamins may substantially reduce the risk of colon cancer. The study points to folic acid as the nutrient responsible for this benefit." The onset of folate deficiency in tumor cells is accompanied by changes in the adhesive properties of the cells. Growth of murine melanoma cells in a low-folate medium for longer than two-and-a-half days resulted in tumor cells that adhered more rapidly and in higher percentages to plastic dishes coated with laminin or fibronectin.

In larger, well-designed studies, the FDA says, in which older patients received either zinc or placebos in addition to multivitamins and mineral preparations, the greatest immune function improvement were among those taking placebos. Zinc supplementation, the FDA says, not only did not improve immune system function in the elderly at 100 mg or more a day, it actually suppressed immunity. See Zinc Chloride. Since the RDAs certainly do not represent current scientific thinking, I usually advise shoring up your nutrient intake with well-designed multivitamins or combinations of nutrients like antioxidant formulas or osteoporosis formulas that specifically target your individual risks. Even though individuals have varying needs for nutrients and supplements, there are a few general recommendations that can be made for adults in midlife. Let's look at the supplements that will provide a good base on which to build individual prescriptions.

In general, however, it is wise for adults to limit any supplemented vitamin D to the 400 IUs per day commonly found in multivitamins and to limit use of vitamin-D-fottified milk for a variety of reasons. HVitamin E (Tocopherol) is a light yellow oil, a fat-soluble vitamin, that is actually, a family of compounds, the tocopherols, found in nature. Alphatoxoph-erol is the most common and the most active of the seven currently described forms—alpha, beta, gamma, delta, epsilon, and zeta. Specifically, d-alpha tocopherol is the most potent form, more active than the synthetic dl-alpha tocopherol.
There are now more high-quality multivitamins that contain additional antioxidants; because these extra nutrients counteract so many disease processes as well as stress, likely the underlying cause of many problems. In addition to a general formula, the following nutrients are specific to the Anti-Aging program (the first seven are antioxidants): • Vitamin E is an important antioxidant nutrient when taken in doses well above the RDA, usually at least 400-1,000 IUs daily. Vitamin E protects cell membranes and in particular prevents lipid irritation and breakdown.

One of the problems with multivitamins is that people don't always feel a difference when taking them. In other words, some multivitamin users do not feel a tremendous surge in energy, or improvement in mood or concentration. Remember that most chronic diseases take years to develop. Long-term nutritional deficiencies are often at the root of these chronic maladies. The immune system requires many vitamins and minerals to function optimally. This is especially true in the elderly. One study examined the effect of a multivitamin on the immune function in the elderly.
