Sixty-three patients were randomized to receive a water-soluble cream (30 mg/g of glucosamine sulfate; 50 mg/g of chondroitin sulfate, 140 mg/g of shark cartilage, 32 mg/g of camphor, and 9 mg/g of peppermint oil) or placebo for 8 weeks. Both groups reported improvement on the visual analog scale pain scores, with the treatment group improving a further 1.2 points (p=0.03) at 4 weeks and 1.8 points (p=0.002) at 8 weeks compared to the placebo group. |

Special supplements for joint and bone health may contain large amounts of manganese ascorbate along with chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine hydrochloride. This type of supplement has been found to relieve pain in some cases of mild to moderate osteoarthritis of the knee.
MANGANESE TOXICITY
Manganese toxicity from food alone has not been reported, although some diets provide as much as 20 mg daily. The Food and Nutrition Board has set a rather conservative tolerable upper intake level (UL) of 11 mg for adults. The UL for children ranges from 2 mg to 6 mg and the UL for adolescents is 9 mg. |

Similar efficacies were demonstrated for chondroitin and glucosamine on the Lequesne Index (LV, and visual analog scale (VAS) for pain and mobility. Join cartilage degeneration was slowed by the long-term daib administration of oral glucosamine at the minimal dose o 1,500 mg during a minimal period of 3 years (Richy et e
2003). An earlier meta-analysis of 16 randomized, controlled trials found glucosamine to be safe and effective for the treatment of osteoarthritis. In 12 of 13 studies comparing it to placebo, glucosamine demonstrated superior pain relief. |

Glucosamine may be taken in conjunction with chondroitin sulfate for an even greater effect on osteoarthritis (see chondroitin Sulfate in this section).
In addition to having benefits for people with osteoarthritis, supplemental glucosamine can be helpful for asthma, bursitis, candidiasis, food allergies, osteoporosis, respiratory allergies, tendinitis, vaginitis, and various skin problems. The product GS-500 from Enzymatic Therapy is a good source of glucosamine. |

Ever since publication of The Arthritis Cure, people have asked about the benefits of taking glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate together. In my experience, I've found that most people do well by just supplementing with glucosamine sulfate—and there have been fewer studies on the chondroitin sulfate. Occasionally, however, when 1 have a patient who doesn't respond so well as I would like to glucosamine sulfate, I'll also recommend a combination with chondroitin sulfate—and sometimes the two, taken together, produce a better effect. |

There's certainly no harm in trying the combination (though cost may be a consideration). The daily dosage recommended for chondroitin sulfate is 1,200 milligrams. |

Several clinical studies, all performed outside the United States, clearly showed that when arthritic patients were given chondroitin sulfates, they not only experienced significant relief in pain and an increase in mobility but felt positive effects long after they discontinued taking the chondroitin. This is good evidence that the treatment did not simply mask the pain but actually helped to restore lost cartilage.
Several other supplements in the Hot 100 can also help reduce the inflammation and pain typical of arthritis, and they can be used with glucosamine, chondroitin, and pregnenolone. |

Perna seems to enhance the regenerative pathways of the cell, including the chondrocytes (cartilage cells) in the synovial membranes. It increases the biological uptake and production of natural substances such as the sulfated GAGs and hyaluronic acid, which are already present in healthy joints. Hyaluronic acid's key role is to help maintain proper lubrication and viscosity within the synovial cavity. |

The Recommended Doses
The standard recommended dosage for these supplements is 1,500 mg of glucosamine and 1,200 mg of chondroitin per day, divided into several doses.
ESSENTIAL MINERALS
Every cell in the body depends on minerals. Minerals are needed for the proper composition of body fluids, the formation of blood and bone, the maintenance of healthy nerve function, and the regulation of muscle tone. Minerals are considered coenzymes, which means that they enable the body to perform all of its many functions—including all functions relating to the control of inflammation. |

I've yet to see any suggestion that glucosamine or chondroitin causes any problems when taken in the recommended doses.
Unfortunately, only about half of the people who use glucosamine and chondroitin experience noticeable improvement in their osteoarthritis symptoms. So I'm inclined to agree with the experts who suggest trying these supplements for a few months. If they help, keep taking them. If not, stop.
Glucosamine and chondroitin are available wherever supplements are sold. |

This is not chondroitin sulfate, or glucosamine, or MSM, or any of the other more common nutritional supplements you might typically take for joint health. Rather, these affect inflammation and joint pain through a different mechanism. They help inhibit the inflammatory response in the human body by fundamentally balancing the body's systems. They're not treating symptoms; they're balancing the body. Both rosemary and turmeric are well known for their tonic effects.
Turmeric also has the advantage of being a potent anti-cancer herb. |

Like glucosamine, chondroitin is found in the normal joint fluid, and it may act as a lubricant of sorts. As a supplement, it is obtained from either cow cartilage or from crustaceans' shells.
The glucosamine-chondroitin combination, one of our favorite pro-drugs, works by improving the body's formation of cartilage, and also by reducing inflammation of the joints themselves.
Another pro-drug is N-acetyl cysteine, or NAC, a naturally occurring amino acid compound found in the body that augments and improves the body's normal mechanisms that thwart illness and disease. |
She read them, and soon started taking 1,500 mg of glucosamine and 1,200 mg of chondroitin sulfate daily in three divided doses.
Three months later her knee pain and stiffness were completely gone, and she was back to playing tennis and golf. She was even ballroom dancing again. She felt so good that she'd begun giving her pet poodle, Maxine, some glucosamine and chondroitin, and Maxine's response was similar to hers. Neither of them, noted Sylvia, experienced any side effects. |

Kidney stones
Like most other diseases and conditions mentioned here, kidney stones are also preventable. What causes kidney stones? The short answer is: Drinking soft drinks, coffee, and lots of tea. Kidney stones are formed through a variety of biochemical processes, but those are the primary foods and beverages that cause kidney stones. |

Glucosamine is in chondroitin Sulfate, and shark cartilage products, but the Glucosamine is bound in chains with attached sugars 250 times larger than a single molecule of GS for difficult absorption (counter with Enzymatic Therapy's GS-500 with 98% absorption). Less easily utilized N-Acetyl Glucosamine (NAG) from an acetic acid molecule instead of Sulfur, L-Glutamine, and Glucose, is broken down or deacetylated by intestinal bacteria, and binds with lectins for elimination in the feces; and Aminosugar Glucosamine Hydrochloride. |

This should also be combined with a long-term nutritional program of glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate, MSM and other supporting supplements that can help joint function in a healthful way over the long term. Although these substances don't work very well in the short term to treat acute arthritis pain, they do help your body solve the underlying nutritional problem.
Arthritis sufferers should especially avoid hydrogenated oils. Hydrogenated oils are toxic to the human body. They contain trans-fatty acids. |
Cucumber juice is one of my highly recommended plant-based medicines for reducing joint pain, and there are many herbs that reduce joint pain in the short term such as boswellia, cherry extract, MSM, glucosamine, and chondroitin sulfate.
From the plant world, the best foods are cherries (about 1 container a day)—which contain anti-inflammatory compounds. They are natural inflammation inhibitors that, for many people, actually work better than prescription drugs. Just keep in mind that when you're dealing with joint pain, these natural remedies are not instant painkillers. |

The Science Behind It
Glucosamine and chondroitin have been studied for many years. The research performed on these natural anti-inflammatories includes the following:
In a study of 414 women with osteoarthritis of the knee, women taking 1,500 mg of glucosamine sulfate (GS) daily experienced no further loss in cartilage tissue, while the placebo group continued to experience cartilage destruction. The women taking the GS supplement also experienced a reduction in pain and an improvement in function. |

Blocking the cancer receptor site
The Winnipeg Free Press in Canada reported a startling story of widespread interest on July 15th, 1995. The report said Manitoba scientists found they can stop the spread of cancer in mice by turning off a cancer cell's sensing ability. Sensors, called receptor sites, on the surface of living cells, are able to be knocked out and completely block the spread of a tumor. The knocked-out receptors later return to normal when the cancer risk has subsided. It's like pulling blinders over a cell. Tumor cells just die once they are blinded. |
