Nevertheless, chondroitin sulfate may be reduced in joint cartilage (page 490) affected by osteoarthritis (page 328) and possibly other forms of arthritis. How much is usually taken? For atherosclerosis (page 38), researchers have sometimes started therapy using very high amounts, such as 5 grams twice per day with meals, lowering the amount to 500 mg three times per day after a few months. Before taking such high amounts, people should consult a doctor. For osteoarthritis (page 328), a typical level is 400 mg three times per day.

Calcium Caution: Lipids are negatively charged ions and so is the phosphate P04-and chondroitin sulfate, which is inside the endothelial tissue. Calcium, a positive ion, can make these two negative ions connect and thus increase the chance of forming plaques in arteries. This is one reason that calcium should not be taken in megadosages. Chondroitin sulfate has been shown, in numerous double-blind trials,2' 3' 4' 5' 6' 7' 8' 9 to relieve symptoms and possibly slow the progression of, or reverse, osteoarthritis.10 Chondroitin and similar compounds are present in the lining of blood vessels and the urinary bladder. They help prevent abnormal movement of blood, urine, or components across the barrier of the vessel or bladder wall. Part of chondroitin's role in blood vessels is to prevent excessive blood clotting. However, whether supplements of chondroirin are able to favorably affect blood clotting remains unclear.
Cartilage, derived from shark, bovine (cow), and other animal sources, is a type of connective tissue composed of mucopolysaccharides (including chondroitin sulfate [page 492]), protein substances, calcium (page 483), sulfur (page 590), and collagen. Collagen is one of the proteins found in most connective tissues, including cartilage, bone, and skin. Gelatin is a form of collagen commonly used in foods, and preliminary reports suggest that consuming gelatin can improve the structure and health of the hair and nails.
Glucosamine sulfate (page 528) and chondroitin sulfate (page 492) may both play a role in wound healing (page 319) by providing the raw material needed by the body to manufacture molecules called glycosamino-glycans found in skin, tendons, ligaments, and joints.37 Test tube and animal studies have found that these substances, and others like them, can promote improved tissue healing.
However, no studies to date have addressed the question of whether taking chondroitin sulfate supplements could promote the development of prostate cancer. Simply because a substance is present in or around cancerous tissue does not by itself suggest that that substance is causing the cancer. For example, calcium (page 483) is a component of atherosclerotic plaques that harden the arteries; however, there is no evidence that taking calcium supplements causes atherosclerosis.

Glucosamine forms the initial building unit for the synthesis of chondroitin sulfate, one of the mucopolysaccharides, although it first becomes galactosamine because chondroitin sulfate is made up of a chain of galactosamine molecules. Hyaluromic acid, however, another beneficial mucopolysaccharide, is made up of glucosamine molecules. If the mucopolysaccharide molecules are then coupled with protein molecules, a new molecule called a. proteoglycan is formed. The proteoglycans are important space-filling molecules in what is known as the extracellular matrix.

However, specific human trials of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate for healing sprains and strains are lacking. The use of DMSO (page 508), a colorless, oily liquid primarily used as an industrial solvent, for therapeutic applications is controversial. However, some evidence indicates that dilutions, when applied directly to the skin, have anti-inflammatory properties and inhibit the transmission of pain messages by nerves, and in this way might ease the pain of minor injuries such as sprains and strains.

Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are compounds produced by the body that contribute to the natural cushioning effect of cartilage. MSM (methylsufonyl-methane), another naturally occurring organic sulfur compound, helps the body manufacture collagen to repair cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and muscles. Various combinations of these nutrients can help to restore flexibility and ease joint pain for some people. Proper exercise can be a profound protector against arthritis, a common joint disease. Liver Located below the diaphragm in the upper right of the abdomen, the liver is a vital organ.

Steenblock explains this therapy: "What we are talking about is a particular substance called chondroitin sulfate, which is a type of proteoglycan. In the person with osteoarthritis these substances gradually diminish in concentration in the joint as the joint becomes worn. If the chondroitin sulfate could be put back into the joint, this would allow for an inhibition of the calcification process and also smooth out and seal the irregularities, the cracks, and the irritations which have occurred through time with wear and tear.
Over the past 10 years or so, chondroitin sulfate has been used in both Europe and Japan for the treatment of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and also atherosclerosis. Again, there is a great similarity between osteoarthritis and atherosclerosis in the sense that both result from the wear and tear caused by irritative substances in the body. We need to protect these collagen surfaces from the irritative substances which circulate in the blood and ultimately get into the joint... "Chondroitin sulfate appears to be one of the best treatments for both arthritis and vascular disease.

However, the evidence for the actual efficacy of chondroitin sulfate when taken by mouth is equivocal. Heat and Cold Therapy Heat and cold can both be used to reduce the pain and inflammation of arthritis. Studies have shown that heat and cold therapies are equally effective in alleviating pain, although they are usually avoided in acute gout. The decision to use heat or cold for arthritis pain depends on the type of arthritis. Heat therapy increases blood flow, pain tolerance, and flexibility. Heat therapy can involve treatment with paraffin wax, microwaves, ultrasound, or moist heat.
They act as structural substances: for example, cellulose in plants, chitin in insects and crustaceans, and chondroitin sulfate as a component of mammalian cartilage tissue. They also serve as energy reserves, in the forms of starch and inulin in plants and glycogen in animals. The lubricant function of hyaluronic acid and the anticoagulant activity of heparin provide some specific examples. Polysaccharides can be subdivided according to structure into homopolysaccharides and hetero-polysaccharides.

Additional sulfur, also essential for cartilage formation, can be obtained in glucosamine sulfate, chondroitin sulfate, or methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), and small amounts of manganese can be obtained in a multimin-eral supplement. What Else Might Help? A variety of other nutrients, herbs, and habits also may reduce inflammation and pain associated with osteoarthritis. The least expensive change is to drink more water. According to Hugh D. Riordan, M.D., of the Center for the Improvement of Human Functioning International, Wichita, Kansas, poor hydration is a common problem.
SAMe has often been recommended for treating inflammation and arthritis: it donates sulfur molecules to glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate, enabling the body to build new collagen and cartilage. SAMe also has been found helpful in treating depression, though B-complex vitamins can boost SAMe levels and are less expensive. Its benefit in depression suggests a common biochemical defect with inflammation. Depression is frequently associated with some inflammatory diseases such as asthma, Alzheimer's, coronary artery disease, and diabetes.
For eight weeks some of the subjects received daily supplements containing 1,500 mg of glucosamine hydrochloride, 1,200 mg of chondroitin sulfate, and 228 mg of manganese ascorbate (a form of vitamin C). Meanwhile, other subjects received placebos, and all the subjects were crossed over to the opposite regimen for another eight weeks. During the study about half of the patients with osteoarthritis of the knees improved, with reductions of 26 to 43 percent in symptoms, while taking the supplements. However, the supplements did not help with low-back pain. In a separate clinical trial, Amal K.

There is evidence suggesting that glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are synergistic, with glucosamine enhancing the production of new cartilage and chondroitin slowing the breakdown of cartilage. Many supplements contain both, and people with osteoarthritis should consider taking 1,200 to 1,500 mg of glucosamine and 1,200 mg of chondroitin daily. As part of an osteoarthritic regimen, 500 to 1,000 mg of vitamin C should be included. Although some of the described studies used manganese ascorbate, this type of vitamin C is difficult to find. Any form of vitamin C should suffice.

He concluded that because there are very few, if any, side effects with these sulfur compounds, and the potential for benefit is great, that human clinical trials should continue.

The same glycosaminoglycans are present in shark cartilage and they provide the very same function in the joints. chondroitin sulfate is by far the most abundant glycosaminoglycan present, comprising about 80 percent of the glycosaminoglycan content. In addition, the glycosaminoglycans serve to inhibit cartilage degradation by inhibiting the activity of the particular enzymes that cause this. These enzymes are called metalloproteinases and elastases and they facilitate the natural breakdown of cartilage.
