Unlike vitamin and mineral supplements, which contain isolated nutrients, the so-called nutraceutical supplements contain compounds extracted from whole foods, then concentrated and shrunk down into a Jetson-like pill. You'll find pills containing broccoli, spinach, tomatoes, mixed vegetables, and many other foods.
The advantage of nutraceuticals is that they contain not just one vitamin or mineral but all of the compounds that are naturally found in foods, in the same proportions that nature intended.
Can they take the place of the real thing?
Probably not. |

Even with enough vitamin and mineral supplements, you may still lose about 5 percent of your bone density in the first six months of nursing. Imagine how much more that would be without nutritional supplementation. Happily, this bone loss begins to be restored twelve months after delivery. Whether nursing beyond nine months causes any permanent loss of bone density is still being debated, but I do not believe there is enough evidence at the present time to justify your stopping breast-feeding after nine months unless you wish to do so. |
| Eat as many eggs and as much butter and soy and corn oil as you can tolerate, and be sure to take high-potency vitamin and mineral supplements. Most nutritionists recommend twice the RDA of each constituent. I agree that that's sufficient for vitamin A, but I recommend the others in even higher doses. For example, I advise 400 IU of water-soluble vitamin E (the fat-soluble preparations will not be absorbed), 400 IU of vitamin D, and 1,000 micrograms of vitamin B]2 daily. To determine your need for additional vitamin K, your doctor will need to test your blood clotting. |

Kollath that raw foods alone, and distincdy not vitamins and mineral supplements alone, were able to restore his animals to full health from the half-health condition of meso-health. Their research findings that live foods have a regenerative power and ability to restore orderly functioning on the cellular and electromagnetic level of the organism support my own clinical observations over the last 19 years. In essence, we can say that by restoring the electrical potential of the cells, raw foods rejuvenate the life force and health of the organism. |

Common sources of copper toxicity are copper plumbing that contaminates drinking water and mineral supplements with too much copper and not enough zinc.
Multiple Vitamin/Mineral Formulas The multiple vitamin/mineral supplement may be the most convenient and economical way of including extra nutrients in your diet. It would be worth your while to find one that takes into account the factors I have discussed above. You may not find every aspect optimal in any one multiple, but if most fit the criteria I have outlined, be satisfied. Do some homework on this, but try not to drive yourself crazy. |
| Some reports suggest that mineral supplements are best taken a half hour or more before or several hours after meals to achieve the best absorption. Other reports suggest that when minerals are taken with meals their absorption is enhanced.11 Since life is complicated enough, keep things simple and take supplements with meals (except for those that specifically require other times).
Zinc/Copper Ratio Zinc and copper antagonize each other. If you supplement with extra zinc, over time you may develop a copper deficiency. |

Chemical and Hormone Contamination
Just as chemicals become concentrated in meats, so residues of pesticides and herbicides find their way into milk. Dairy products also contain residues of the antibiotics and hormones given to cows. The newest potential assault is synthetic bovine somatotropin, a genetically engineered growth hormone, given to most dairy cows. |

| Taking the right vitamin and mineral supplements can be a sensible way to get a little extra nutritional insurance, says Roe.
"The ideal is to get the nutrients the way nature intended, through the food we eat," she says. "But some nutrients are so important, it may be worthwhile to take a supplement if you're not sure you're getting enough."
Among the vital nutrients are vitamins C and E and beta-carotene, called antioxidants. The antioxidants act as a kind of nutritional SWAT team, fighting to protect the body's cells from damage. |

Also realize that many B-complex vitamins and some mineral supplements contain yeast; you can easily find yeast-free supplements. If you are not milk allergic, instead of using the aged cheeses listed under Group C, use younger cheeses that have minimal mold content (cream cheese, cottage cheese, jack, feta, ricotta, mozzarella).
Fermented dairy products such as yogurt, buttermilk, and kefir contain beneficial bacteria, and are generally helpful if unsweetened. But these foods can also trigger reactions as well due to yeast allergy and of course, due to milk allergy. |

| So while you may tend to think that "Flintstone vitamins" are for growing youngsters, in fact vitamin and mineral supplements as well as a good diet are in order for the elderly and many middle-aged people as well.
Which supplements? How much do you need? Should you run down to the local grocery store and buy a bottle of tablets and maybe start gulping them down by the handful?

CHOOSING DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS
Vitamin and mineral supplements are either isolated from food sources or manufactured synthetically. Synthetic and natural vitamins and minerals have identical chemical structures and supposedly do the same work within the body, although there is some controversy over which are more effectively absorbed and used. It is true that, for example, vitamin Bj (thiamine) is the same molecule however it is made. |
| In general, you should store vitamin and mineral supplements away from heat, tightly capped, and out of reach of children. Keep vitamins A and E in the refrigerator. These two vitamins are usually oil-based and will keep longer in a cool environment. Check the expiration dates on any formula you buy. A vitamin or mineral formula that has passed its expiration date will not have full potency.
Paying attention to diet and nutrition is perhaps the single most important supportive measure you can take for your health. |
| Vitamin and mineral supplements may also be prescribed if you are unable to absorb nutrients from foods.
¦ If dietary restriction proves ineffective, prednisone (Deltasone) may be prescribed. This is a steroid that suppresses the body's inflammatory response. However, it also has adverse effects on immune function and the adrenal gland, so it is best to take the lowest dose that helps, and for the shortest possible amount of time. |

So talk with your doctor before taking mineral supplements such as iron and selenium.
You also need to be careful with over-the-counter remedies like antacids. They contain magnesium, and an overdose can lead to diarrhea and even kidney damage. Zinc lozenges for cold therapy can also be dangerous if you take too many.
Even soft drinks and convenience foods can be a problem because of their high phosphorus content. Too much phosphorus can interfere with your body's ability to absorb and use calcium. Like everything else, follow moderation when trying to meet your daily mineral requirements. |

This does not suggest that it is a good idea for people to take excessive quantities of non-organic mineral supplements. Studies have shown that though the body will utilize a supplement in the case of a specific mineral need (such as a crisis of spasmophilia), 10 to 20 times more than the organic form of the mineral is required in order to achieve the same results. Such high dosages, however, are not easy for the body to assimilate and present the risk of an overdose that in and of itself can have adverse consequences.
How, then, should we address our need for supplements? |

And, in fact, this is better than taking mineral supplements, because your body doesn't seem to absorb minerals taken in pill form as readily as minerals that you get in foods.
Iron
Iron is the most common trace mineral found in your body. It makes up the most important part of your red blood cells — hemoglobin, which transports oxygen around your system. Without iron, fatigue sets in, because your body processes "smother" from a lack of oxygen.
Iron supplements really can boost energy, especially in menstruating women who often lose as much as 10 to 15 mgs. of this mineral per day. |

So far, mineral supplements and exercise have a more proven track record. A study conducted in New Zealand showed that postmenopausal women who took 1,000 milligrams of calrium a day were able to cut their bone loss in half. Equally as important is magnesium to help with calcium's assimilation. Another way to slow bone loss is with a half-hour session of weight-bearing exercises, or even exercising in a chair, three times a week. All postmenopausal women can take a hint from vegetarian women, who experience less bone loss: Go easy onprotein since high amounts block calcium absorption. |

DESCRIPTION
Colloidal mineral supplements refer to liquid extracts of minerals mainly derived from humic shale deposits or from aluminosilicate-containing clays. Humic shale extracts predominantly contain sulfates of iron and aluminum and traces of colloidal metal hydroxides. The term colloidal mineral is derived from the presence in these preparations of colloidal metal hydroxides. However, many of the minerals are present in ionic forms. |

Magnesium phosphate, a white, odorless powder, and magnesium sulfate are used as mineral supplements for food, leavening agents, and pH control agents. Recommended daily allowances, according to the National Academy of Sciences, are 40 milligrams for infants, 100 to 300 milligrams for children, 350 milligrams for adult males and females. Magnesium sulfate is used also as a corrective in the brewing industry and for fertilizers. Magnesium silicate, a fine, white, odorless and tasteless power, is used in table salt and vanilla powder as an anticaking agent. |

Q—I've heard that mineral supplements do no good unless they are chelated. Is this true and what does it mean?
A—A number of supplement products are advertised as "chelated." These products usually cost more than non-chelated products. Chelation is a process that is supposed to make minerals more readily absorbable by altering their electrical charge, and in some cases this is true. The bioavailability of most non-chelated minerals, however, is sufficient when taken in the sort of combinations/regimens recommended earlier in this book. |

Many vitamin or mineral supplements contain about 100-150 meg. of chromium. Some people take up to 1 mg. (1,000 meg.) per day for short periods without problems; this is not suggested as a long-term regimen but rather to help replenish chromium stores when deficiency is present. All of the precursors to the active form of GTF are used in some formulas, but usually with chromium in lower doses, such as 50 meg., since it is thought to be better absorbed with niacin and the amino acids glycine, cysteine and glutamic acid. |
