SUPPLEMENTS In general, a person who eats a well-balanced diet will not need vitamin or mineral supplements for their exercise needs. However, not all the vitamins and minerals naturally available in foods will be available to everyone, due to food sensitivities, poor absorption, chemical imbalances, and improper food combining. Persons affected by these factors may need supplements, even megadoses, of vitamins and minerals to bring a particular deficiency up to par or to strengthen a weak point. Exercise stresses the body, with B complex vitamins in particular burned off by stress.

What Color is Your Diet?

Vitamin and mineral supplements, in forms easily absorbed in the digestive tracts of older people, are an important addition to the diet once these changes have taken place. While I am a strong proponent of impeccable dietary habits throughout life, I'm also a realist who sees that supplements are necessary for the elderly, who are unlikely to get what they need without them. Women over fifty need 1,500 milligrams of calcium because the loss of estrogen reduces the efficiency of calcium absorption.

The natural chelating process is not performed efficiently in many people, and because of this a good deal of the mineral supplements they take are of little use. When you realize that the body does not use whatever it takes in, that most of us do not digest our foods efficiently, that only 2-10 percent of inorganic iron taken into the body is actually absorbed, and, even with this small percentage, 50 percent is then eliminated, you can recognize the importance of taking minerals that have been chelated.

Vitamin and minerals Vitamin and mineral supplements can be helpful during and after weight loss as many people on weight loss diets do not consume adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals. Some common sources of nutrients such as calcium and vitamin E are found in high quantities in high calorie foods which people on weight loss diets tend to avoid. B vitamins B vitamins are essential for the metabolism of food and optimal intake is necessary to ensure that this takes place effectively. Biotin and pantothenic acid supplements have been used in weight loss programs.
An athlete who eats fortified cereals, sports bars and mineral supplements may be getting excessive doses of certain minerals. Antioxidants High intensity exercise may cause excess free radicals to be produced in the cells. The damage from these increase a person's susceptibility to cancer, heart disease, cataracts, premature aging, decreased immunity and other diseases. (See page 417 for more information.) Free radical production increases as the body's oxygen consumption increases, particularly in the muscle fibers and in the mitochondria, the energy centers of the cell.
Manganese most often occurs in multivitamin and mineral supplements in doses of 1 to 9 mg. Toxic effects of excess intake Toxic effects from oral ingestion of manganese are very rare and include lethargy, involuntary movements, changes in muscle tone and posture, and coma. Toxic effects known as "manganese madness" have been observed in manganese miners. Symptoms include unaccountable laughter, impulsiveness, inability to sleep, violent acts, delusions and hallucinations.
However, many multivitamin and mineral supplements do not contain sufficient calcium or magnesium, and additional single supplements may be useful for those who need higher doses, such as postmenopausal women. Some supplements group vitamin A and beta carotene together, making it difficult to tell how much of each is present. A supplement which provides vitamin A as beta carotene only may be best. Most multivitamin supplements contain only small amounts of beta carotene so it may be worth taking a separate supplement; although probably not if you are a smoker.
Chelated mineral supplements may be absorbed better than nonchelated minerals. Some people, particularly those who are older, often have low stomach acid; and minerals are often chelated with acidic compounds, for example calcium citrate. In some cases, chelated minerals may be less irritating to the stomach than nonchelated minerals. Timed release supplements Timed release or sustained release vitamins are designed to dissolve and be absorbed slowly. The theory behind this is that the vitamins have maximum effectiveness when blood levels are stable, and losses through excretion are minimal.
Vitamin and mineral supplements come in various forms. The most common are tablets which are convenient to store and carry and have the longest shelf life. Capsules are also easy to store, but may not be as good at protecting the contents from oxidation. Enteric-coated capsules, which are also known as timed release supplements, are another form. They are designed to pass through the stomach to dissolve in the intestine. Fat soluble vitamins and other oil supplements often come in the form of gelatin capsules. Powder forms do not contain fillers, binders or additives.

Physicians generally recommend 800 to 1,200 mg of pure calcium daily either from the diet or from mineral supplements. Vitamin D and magnesium enhance the benefits of calcium. INSTRUCTIONS Experts recommend that calcium be taken with meals to improve absorption. INTERACTION This is probably not a particularly dangerous interaction, but because Tenormin is prescribed so frequently and because so many people are taking calcium-based antacids or supplements, it is an interaction that may occur more frequently than physicians or pharmacists realize.

Gerson used an elaborate program of natural foods and fresh juices grown without synthetic chemicals, along with liver injections, potassium iodide, and a sophisticated course of vitamins and mineral supplements. The diet was low in salt, fat, and animal protein and high in carbohydrates and fresh organic fruits and vegetables. (Dr. Gerson adamantly opposed the use of chemical fertilizers.) It eliminated meat, milk, alcohol, and canned or bottled foods, and forbade smoking. Dr. Gerson claimed a documented success rate of around 30 percent with terminal cancer patients.
