| If you have peripheral vascular disease, coronary artery disease, abdominal aortic aneurysm, diabetes, or metabolic syndrome, discuss testing and management with your practitioner as well as all available options, including exercise, weight management, dietary changes, aspirin, drug treatment, and nutritional supplement interventions.
Triglycerides are an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease in women, but especially when increased triglycerides are present in association with low HDL levels. |
| The most widely studied nutritional supplement for fertility in both men and women is zinc. Zinc plays a vital role in cell division, and deficiencies are associated with reduced fertility, increased miscarriages, and chromosome damage. Less than optimal zinc levels not only reduce conception rates, but babies have lower birth weights, more birth defects, and can have a less developed brain and nervous system.31 Zinc deficiency is especially important for sperm development.

Alcohol and Smoking. Consumption of alcohol also appears to promote bone loss. Scientific evidence links consumption of alcohol (seven ounces or more per week) with lower bone mass, increased bone loss, an increase risk of falls, and a higher incidence of hip fracture.53 A meta-analysis showed that consuming two alcoholic drinks per day significantly increases the risk of fracture,54 and even heavier consumption has additional negative effects on bone density. |

Chrysin, principally obtained from the plant Passiflora coerulea, is marketed as a nutritional supplement and is especially popular among male body builders and other athletes because of its possible action in inhibiting the conversions of androgens to estrogens.
Chrysin is a solid substance with the molecular formula G5H10O4. Its molecular weight is 254.24 daltons. It is practically insoluble in water. Chrysin is also known as 5,7-dihydroxyflavone and 5,7-dihydroxy-2-phenyl-4rY-l-benzo-pyran-4-one. Chrysin is found in plants as such but is mainly found naturally in the form of a glucoside. |

Why the FDA censors the truth about healing foods and supplements
Current FDA regulations do not allow nutritional supplement manufacturers to make any true statements about the health benefits of their products. Companies that sell vitamin C, for example, cannot claim vitamin C cures scurvy without being threatened, raided at gunpoint and having their inventory confiscated by the Food and Drug Administration. |

Bovine lactoferrin, derived from whey proteins, is marketed as a nutritional supplement. Supplemental lactoferrin typically contains low amounts of iron.
ACTIONS AND PHARMACOLOGY
ACTIONS
Supplemental lactoferrin may have antimicrobial, immunomodulatory, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions.
MECHANISM OF ACTION
The possible antibacterial activity of supplemental lactoferrin might be accounted for, in part, by its ability to strongly bind iron. Iron is essential to support the growth of pathogenic bacteria. Lactoferrin may also inhibit the attachment of bacteria to the intestinal wall. |

He's also the biggest supporter of the Health Freedom Protection Act that would end FDA tyranny and allow -- for the first time in decades -- nutritional supplement companies to tell the truth about the scientifically-validated health benefits of their products.
It's not clear what a Ron Paul presidency would do for consumer protection against Chinese-made imports, but it's crystal clear that U.S. consumers would be freer, wealthier and healthier under Ron Paul's policies than those of any other potential presidential candidate. |

Until November, 1989, L-tryptophan was a popular nutritional supplement in the U.S. In November, 1989, the FDA recalled supplementary L-tryptophan because of several reports associating the amino acid with some severe side effects. These side-effects were part of a syndrome called the eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome. As it turned out, the cause of the syndrome was due to a contaminant in a batch of L-tryptophan that was produced from a genetically modified microorganism (GMO), and not L-tryptophan itself. |

REPPED: Here's a brief overview of some of the campaigns of terror the FDA has initiated against natural healers, nutritional supplement companies and other organizations. Many were conducted using armed agents wielding assault rifles and automatic weapons, dressed in body armor. All of them were intended to destroy natural medicine, thereby protecting the profits of drug companies and conventional medicine practitioners.
This is the true history of the FDA that the FDA doesn't wan't you to know! |

The FDA's campaign of censorship and intimidation against nutritional supplement companies has been called "a campaign of terrorism" against U.S. companies, and even while over 100,000 Americans are killed each year by pharmaceuticals -- the very people who could likely be saved by safe, natural and effective remedies that work even better than prescription drugs -- the FDA continues to protect the financial interest of Big Pharma by censoring all free speech from food or supplement companies. |

Results from this prospective, open study of monotherapy with omega-3 fatty acids in the over-the-counter product OmegaBrite suggest that manic symptoms can be rapidly reduced in youths with BPD with a safe and well-tolerated nutritional supplement," wrote lead researcher Dr. Janet Wozniak.
The high-EPA supplement of Omega-3 fatty acids, called OmegaBrite, was tested for effectiveness and safety on 20 boys and girls with bipolar disorder, ages 6 to 17 years old, over an eight-week period. Half of the participants experienced a rapid 30 percent reduction in symptoms with no side effects. |

The FDA has already criminalized nutritional supplement companies who dare to tell the truth about the health benefits of their supplements. (Read the true history of armed FDA raids on vitamin companies here: http://www.newstarget.com/021791.html )
Next, parents who refuse to subject their children to the chemical pharmaceuticals proposed by Big Pharma will be criminalized, rounded up and incarcerated for "refusing to comply with public health policy." This is all being done by the State in the name of "protecting the children" from their own natural health parents. |

Soy protein isolates have become popular items in the nutritional supplement marketplace. Most of these supplements also contain the soy isoflavones genistin, daidzin and glycitin.
ACTIONS AND PHARMACOLOGY
ACTIONS
Soy protein may have lipid-lowering, antiatherogenic, antioxidant, anticarcinogenic and antiosteoporotic activities.
MECHANISM OF ACTION
Diets rich in soy protein have been found to reduce serum levels of total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, triglycerides and apolipoprotein B (apo B). The mechanism of the lipid-lowering activity of soy protein is unclear. |

The inset "Choosing Supplements" on page 34 offers some suggestions about what to look for in a nutritional supplement.
You can safely use the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants recommended in each chapter. The doses offered are safe and won't harm you even if you use them with your medications. When it comes to herbs and amino acids, more care is required, especially when you are taking medications. Consult with your pharmacist and physician as you work out your total supplement plan. |

This is a bill that has some good points (such as banning advertising on new drugs until they're on the market for two years) but also contains some extremely dangerous provisions that have been exposed by Byron Richards, an author and nutritional supplement formulator who has been working to protect health freedom for decades.
We republished Byron Richards' most recent article which specifically points out that this FDA Evilization Act of 2007 could allow the FDA to get into the business of licensing and selling drugs and medical devices. |

| Staff at the center conduct a thorough nutritional and biochemical workup of patients and then prescribe a customized nutritional supplement regimen.
In an analysis of 207 randomly selected patients, the center's scientific director, William Walsh, Ph.D., found that customized supplements led to a 92 percent lower frequency of physical assaults and 53 percent fewer occurrences of property damage. Walsh reported that three-fourths of patients with intense angry outbursts and violent behavior had abnormally high levels of copper relative to zinc. |
| The center customized a nutritional supplement regimen for Randy's particular needs, and he was permitted to take the supplements during his incarceration.
Over the next two months, Randy's behavior improved significantly. He became more athletic, had fewer violent thoughts, and had no scuffles with other people. At the end of the third month, Randy was symptom free and was allowed to return home and to school, where his grades became better than average. His behavior at home and school substantially improved, and he showed no signs of violence or sadism. |

| In a similar study of 39,633 men, researchers from Harvard found that men who took a nutritional supplement containing magnesium had a 23% lower risk of heart disease than those who didn't.
HEADACHES
Research shows that people who get migraine, tension and cluster (bouts of frequent attacks) headaches often have a magnesium deficiency. Magnesium relaxes blood vessels and muscles, regulates neurotransmitters and thins the blood—which can defuse headaches. |
| MINOCYCLINE AND CREATINE
New finding: In an NIH-sponsored clinical trial, 200 Parkinson's patients who did not yet require medication were randomly assigned to receive 200 mg daily of the antibiotic minocycline, 10 grams (g) daily of creatine (a nutritional supplement used to increase lean body mass and strength) or a placebo for 12 months.
Minocycline was chosen because of its antiinflammatory effects. Inflammation has been detected in the brains of Parkinson's patients. Creatine is an energy booster, and decreased energy utilization is a problem in Parkinson's disease. |

There are all sorts of claims for the health benefits of taking blackstrap molasses as a nutritional supplement to the tune of a couple of tablespoons a day. Some of the claims are probably far-fetched, but where there's that much smoke there's probably a fire somewhere. To my taste buds, blackstrap molasses is completely delicious, and a nutrient-dense sweetener that I wholeheartedly recommend. Best bet: Look for unsulfured blackstrap molasses from organic sugar.
WORTH KNOWING
Blackstrap molasses has a long and storied tradition as a health food and a remedy for all sorts of ailments. |

And, I think it is a great conflict of interest for anyone to both write about a nutritional supplement and sell that same nutritional supplement. It doesn't mean that they're wrong. It just means that their information must be taken in context.
I encourage you and other readers to live day-to-day with that kind of skepticism. We should all be skeptics of people who are trying to sell us products, especially if it's drugs or herbs or vitamins, because anything can have an element of hype or exaggeration to it. |

Neither can any nutritional supplement, for that matter—they are "supplements," not food replacements. Here are the basics to keep in mind:
Choosing Supplements
As you navigate the vast supplement marketplace, you may find yourself wondering: Can I just buy the cheapest version of a nutrient or herb? Will I get what I pay for if I buy the pricier version? Why don't supplement bottles tell me what they're for—or any other information I can use to make a choice?
In terms of cost and quality, it really is "buyer beware. |

Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine)
This nutrient, like the other B vitamins, plays multiple roles in the human body, supporting about 100 different enzymatic reactions and helping to make both mood-boosting (serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine) and calming (gamma-aminobutyric acid, or GABA) neurotransmitters.
Vitamin B6 is also needed to "burn" proteins for energy; for the transport of oxygen around the body; and for the building of another B vitamin, niacin. |

Pregnancy: nutritional supplement doses of vitamins and minerals are generally considered safe during pregnancy. Daily dietary Vitamin E requirements are the same during pregnancy (dietary reference intake of 15 milligrams alpha-tocopherol equivalents) as those recommended in nonrepro-ducing adult women (Picciano, 2003). Doses of Vitamin E above the recommended daily allowance should not be used in women during pregnancy. |
