This means that if you don't take bile salts as a nutritional supplement every time you eat healthy fats, you'll miss out on all-important omega-3 fatty acids and other healthy oils. That's why people who have had gall bladder removal surgery usually suffer the classic signs of EFA deficiencies: poor nervous system function, irritability, learning difficulties, heart disease, poor blood sugar control, and so on.
Doctors and surgeons flat out aren't telling patients this all-important information. It's downright criminal, if you ask me. This basic education should be required by law. |

You can go down a list and look at the thousands of drugs that are available, and in nearly every case, there is a food, an herb, a nutritional supplement, or a lifestyle change that will work far better and eliminate the need for that drug entirely.
And yet we live in a nation that's focused on drugs, and not focused on healing foods. If we would just turn to the healing foods, we could solve this health problem and return to a national state of outstanding health, with a shocking drop in health care costs to boot. |

A comprehensive nutritional supplement program that provides all of the vitamins and minerals involved in bone health may be valuable in preventing and treating osteoporosis.
Exercise
Exercise plays an important role in prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. Weight-bearing exercise strengthens bones, increases bone mass, and increases a person's reaction time and stability, thus decreasing the likelihood of a bone-breaking fall. Walking, running, tennis, aerobics, and weightlifting are effective at building and maintaining bone mass. |

| This sort of activity by the FDA should be halted and investigated by the FBI so that nutritional supplement manufacturers can operate in a free environment, without having to watch their back to wonder if the next federally approved "inquisition" is on its way.
Overhaul our atrocious school lunch programs
We should also overhaul our school lunch programs. Currently, school lunches offer terrible nutrition to students. |

And that's one of the things I did at this show, conducting well over 30 interviews with various individuals -- pioneering doctors, researchers, clinicians, people who formulate nutritional supplement products, people who are inventing new technologies for nutrient delivery systems -- all sorts of innovative people who represent the real future of health in the western world.
Many of the best health products, I've learned, simply aren't found in distribution channels (health food stores, namely). |

Physician's Formulas, sent March 20, 2006, the FDA claims the following text is also a "health claim" that transforms a nutritional supplement into a drug:
"5-HTP converts into serotonin. Serotonin has been studied in relation to depression. In fact, SSRI drugs such as Prozac work for depression by influencing serotonin levels."
This statement is also quite true, and yet the FDA demands it be censored under the threat of being prosecuted for violating federal laws. f ' / , I'l. |

As a cautionary measure, we always recommend a bone-building nutritional supplement (see chapter on osteoporosis) for people taking thyroid-hormone preparations. In addition, bone density can be monitored directly by a type of X-ray (DEXA) or indirectly with a urine test. Most of our experience has been with desiccated thyroid, so we cannot be certain that synthetic preparations such as L-thyroxine have the same safety profile.
Conventional Treatment versus Natural Hormone Treatment
Conventional treatment for hypothyroidism is L-thyroxine (Synthroid, Levothroid, and others) . |
| Butyrate is also available ofally as a nutritional supplement, but taking butyrate by mouth is not likely to improve ulcerative colitis very much. It may be possible to increase colonic butyrate levels somewhat by consuming adequate amounts of fiber in the diet.
Hormone Therapy: DHEA
In a study of 46 individuals with ulcerative colitis, 79% had abnormally low blood levels of the adrenal hormone dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA)." In 1994, this hormone was shown to be effective in treating individuals with lupus,12 an autoimmune disease. |
| However, some practitioners of natural medicine have observed that taking both progesterone and a "bone building" nutritional supplement has a greater effect on bone density than taking either treatment by itself.
It must be pointed out that the amount of natural progesterone found in some over-the-counter skin creams is not enough to prevent the uterine-cancer-promoting effect of Premarin. Therefore, it could be dangerous to switch on your own from a progestin to natural progesterone, while continuing your estrogen preparation. |

| Instead, its primary use as a nutritional supplement is in supporting proper liver function in the dosage range of 50 to 100 milligrams daily.
Betaine is often referred to as a "lipotropic factor" because of its ability to help the liver process fats (lipids). In animal studies, betaine supplementation has been shown to protect against chemical damage to the liver. The first stage of liver damage as a result of alcohol is the accumulation of fat in the liver (alcohol-induced fatty liver disease). |
| Other Recommendations
A high-potency multiple vitamin and mineral formula (zinc is especially important) or a B-vitamin complex is the best first-step nutritional supplement. A good dosage of thiamine is 50 to 100 milligrams daily.
Alzheimer's Disease
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a degenerative brain disorder that manifests as a progressive deterioration of memory and mental function, a state of mind commonly referred to as dementia. In the United States, 5 percent of the population over age 65 suffers from severe dementia, while another 10 percent suffers from mild to moderate dementia. |

I currently recommend two companies, and I've been told they both recently lowered their prices on astaxanthin, so it's a better deal than ever:
AstaFactor fro Mera Pharmaceuticals
BioAstin from Cyanotech
Of course, I was curious about how such a simple-sounding nutritional supplement could deliver such astounding health benefits, so about a year ago I bought some astaxanthin and started trying it myself. I'm happy to report to you that the results are in. Astaxanthin greatly reduced my muscle soreness from intense exercise (i.e. gymnastics), and at the same time increased my flexibility. |

Sometimes people ask me -- as if I were a doctor -- they will say, "How many capsules of Alive (a nutritional supplement) should I take every day? And should I take it with meals or between meals or should I have it with water or do I have to drink it with milk or juice?" And when people ask me these questions I immediately recognize that they have come from the world of pharmaceuticals -- they're used to asking these questions of their pharmacist or their doctor. They're used to thinking of everything as a drug.
These aren't drugs, folks, they're foods. |

The health benefits of Salmon Essentials
The Salmon Essentials nutritional supplement is actually good medicine. If it could be patented and sold as a prescription drug, it would probably be one of the most popular and exciting prescription drugs released on the market in years. The essential fatty acids in this product can lower total triglycerides, lower high cholesterol, reduce the buildup of plaque or atherosclerosis, and dramatically reduce the risk of heart attacks and stroke. |

| In fact, the FDA battled vigorously against the DSHEA Act in 1994 that finally allowed nutritional supplement manufacturers to make qualified statements on their products, as long as such statements were followed with the quote, "This statement has not been endorsed by the FDA."
We should allow supplement manufacturers to tell the truth about what their products do when it is based on available clinical evidence. It shouldn't be illegal to speak the truth about the relationship between nutrition and chronic disease. |
