This doesn't mean that natural changes that occur in women's bodies during menstruation should be treated as an illness; PMS is best viewed as a collection of symptoms that can be relieved through diet, exercise, nutritional supplements, herbs and, in severe cases, hormone therapy. Both physical and emotional factors affect hormonal regulation, therefore, you not only have to learn how to improve your diet but how to deal with stress and emotional problems. Diet Even before you consider using supplements for PMS, be sure that you are eating the right foods.

McCaleb emphasizes that the fact that such nutritional supplements are concentrated is the whole point, the very nature of dietary supplements: "They are concentrated ways to supplement the diet with something in a convenient form." Thus, some herbal supplements are concentrated as well. The TDH proposal exempted the over-the-counter (OTC) drugs Vivarin and No-Doz, which contain pure caffeine. No one would call them food. Primatene is an OTC drug that contains ephedrine, the major active chemical purified from ma huang. Millions of Americans use this drug every day to treat asthma.
Pharmacognosists may insist that medicinal herbs are not foods or nutritional supplements, because anything used to treat disease or improve health must conform to the definition of the word drug. Pharmacognosists also typically see no difference between natural and synthetic substances. Unfortunately, though we'd like to hope otherwise, classifying herbs as "drugs" may be the only way herbs will ever get studied, taught, and covered by insurance in this country.
Instead, the show lumped herbal medicine, herbal "drugs" for feelgood stimulation, and vitamins and mineral and nutritional supplements all into one basket—and it was presented, at best, as a questionable basket. This lack of distinction has been broadly perpetuated by most media as the furor has spread, including the New York Times, Newsweek, Prime Time Live, and CNN. (Mark Blumenthal, executive director of the American Botanical Council and editor of HerbalGram, sent a letter to the New York Times correcting numerous misleading and false statements, but his letter was not published.

The FDA Is Once Again Attempting To Take Away Your Family's Right To Choose Safe And Beneficial nutritional supplements lrnost from its inception, the FDA has voiced AMA policy in attacking pre- -iventarive health care and in particular, nutritional supplementation. The results are 2 billion dollars a day in health care costs and millions of concerned Americans who cannot afford health insurance. Congressional letter writing campaign in history.
Later that year, the FDA made one last attempt to classify nutritional supplements as over-the-counter drugs. It recruited a panel of nutrition scientists to produce a monograph on vitamin and mineral supplements and used the monograph in a way that could not have been better designed to provoke opposition: It defined vitamin and mineral supplements as drugs that would be "labeled for use in the prevention or treatment of a deficiency when the need for such therapy has been determined by a physician (emphasis added).
I am one of the millions of Americans outraged by the Food and Drug Administration's unwarranted efforts to keep me from purchasing the nutritional supplements I desire," wrote one Times reader. Another complained that the FDA "is overreaching its authority to a frightening degree and extending into areas that consumers are far better able to deal with themselves individually. "The FDA," wrote a third, is trying "to gull the public into not fighting to have the proposed rules changed.
The Times interpreted this action as "part of the agency's increased efforts to stop manufacturers of nutritional supplements from making unproven claims for their products, to bar their use by doctors unless first approved by the agency, and to halt their sale as medicines."16 The Times characterized the FDA as opposed to the idea that supplements "can be effective, whether or not they are backed by science." It reported protests to the FDA action, among them a press conference at which celebrities urged the public to "start screaming at Congress and the White House not to let the F.D.A.

I wanted the book to serve as a bridge between the two opposing camps and hoped that it would bring the investigation of nutritional supplements onto a higher plane, where the consumer would be better served. In large part I feel rewarded for my effort, as that book managed to garner strong support in both camps, drew both closer to the center and brought many serious researchers, previously alienated by the extremes on both sides, into the supplement arena.
Things that are helpful in this syndrome include dietary modification, mild exercise, stress reduction and the use of nutritional supplements. The amino acid L-tyrosine, taken at 1.5 to 6 grams daily, has also been found to be useful. Some CFS sufferers say they are helped by some of the substances used in chronic viral syndromes (see next section). A drug available in Europe called S-adenosylmethionine (SAM), which is a derivate of the amino acid L-methionine, is showing promise in the treatment of some of the symptoms of CFS, especially the aches, pains and depression. The Formula 1) Diet.
The use of nutritional supplements is sometimes useful in the treatment of PMS symptoms. I have often had success in treating PMS by using specific nutrients for specific symptoms. L-tyrosine appears helpful for depression and fatigue, perhaps the most disabling symptoms of PMS. Vitamin E often relieves breast tenderness. Phosphatidylcholine is sometimes useful in controlling some mood and memory problems. Vitamin B6 has been reported to occasionally relieve some PMS symptoms, especially the emotional ones. Scattered reports suggest that L-carnitine may help with bloating.
They should be regarded as drugs and not as nutritional supplements or anti-aging substances that can be taken without medical supervision. Transfer Factor ("Soluble Cellular Immunity") The discoverer of transfer factor called it "soluble cellular immunity." It is an extract of healthy lymphocytes, cells of immunity, and is used in an effort to transfer cell-mediated immunity from a healthy person to an immune-compromised person. The healthy person is one who is known to be immune or resistant to the problem being treated.
Charcoal should be taken at least one hour before or after therapeutic drugs or nutritional supplements are taken. Those on prescription drugs should use charcoal only with their doctors' approval. Those who take very high doses of charcoal (e.g., 50 grams per day or higher) over long periods of time should supplement with a well-balanced vitamin/mineral formula. High doses of charcoal, in any case, should be taken only with medical supervision. Note that charcoal is available in tablets, powder and capsules.
It analyzes all the vitamins and minerals that have any genuine relevance as nutritional supplements. It does the same for the amino acids and many other substances. Each analysis is structured so that you can quickly and easily determine what the nutrient is, what it does—and doesn't—do, who it's good for, what ailments it can help treat or prevent, what amounts it should be taken in, what it should be taken with, what precautions apply and so on. Kessler and I disagreed about herbs and nutritional supplements. He has come down rather hard on them, while I am convinced that they can be useful. They're a cheap way to prevent some conditions, ameliorate others and even cure a few. But the FDA does not allow any medicinal claims for herbs and supplements unless they have been proven to FDA satisfaction with extensive clinical trials. As of 1995, it cost $500 million to jump through the FDA hoops to prove any new drug, herb or supplement to be safe and effective. Few marketers of herbs or supplements have that kind of spending money.

In addition, many nutritional supplements containing combinations of vitamins and minerals are promoted for bone health. These combination supplements, besides being unproven, are much more expensive than basic calcium carbonate. As we have said throughout this book, low bone mineral density is not the same as fracture risk. Some studies show that women who eat diets rich in calcium lose less bone and are less likely to fracture. A fourteen-year study of older men and women found that hip fractures occurred less in those whose diets contained moderate amounts of calcium.
