The doctor told her she'd be in a wheelchair the rest of her life with a hip replacement, and now, her hip was totally rebuilt just by her dietary changes, nutritional supplements, and her faith.
I had to change everything, especially my taste buds. The first time I tasted carrot juice, it was from a can. I swore I'd never drink that gross stuff again. The next time, I had it thawed out from being frozen. That was a little better. When I juiced it fresh, it was much better, but when I mixed it with the beets and other greens, it began to take on a hue somewhat reminiscent of dark venous blood. |

^^our body is like a machine, and food is the fuel that keeps it chugging. It has always taken a lot of food to fill your tank and run your motor, right? Not so long ago, you could down a cheeseburger, hot dog, fries and a milk shake—all in one sitting—and still have room for a big hunk of chocolate cake.
Try that now, and what's the first thing you think about? Probably your waistline.
Today, being a lean, mean machine isn't so easy. |

The important point is not that the FDA should do more, but that it applies a glaringly unfair double standard against nutritional supplements. In November of 1973 it stopped the production and distribution of a product known as Aprikern. Aprikern is the trade name given to apricot kernels that have been ground, cold pressed to remove the fatty oils, and encapsulated. The process retains the nitriloside or vitamin B17 content, increases the potency concentration by approximately 20%, reduces the caloric content, and increases the resistance to rancidity. |

Herbal remedies and nutritional supplements are undoubtedly also accidentally consumed by children, but rarely with harmful results. The most common cause of harm to small children from dietary supplements is iron supplements, because relatively small amounts can easily become toxic.
Strong herbs, including stimulants and stimulant laxatives, should be kept from children's reach. Herbs that are intended for conditions experienced exclusively by mature adults are, of course, inappropriate for children. These would include saw palmetto, black cohosh, and vitex. |
There are certainly many other discoveries to be made in this emerging science, and some of these may involve herbs or nutritional supplements. For now, there are some known interactions, and these are detailed for each herb in Part II.
As a general rule, herbs do not interfere with the effects of conventional medications. As with drugs, though, it is wise to seek professional guidance before combining substances with similar effects. For example, taking synthetic sedatives along with alcohol or antihistamines is not recommended. |

The Ayurvedic view of herbal medicine always considers the application of herbal and nutritional supplements in light of all other factors of a person's lifestyle. Herbs are used holistically along with an emphasis on diet, exercise, and stress management.
Categories of Herbs
Ayurveda classifies herbs into six main categories of action. Based on their main chemical components, they can be recognized by six characteristic tastes—sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter, and astringent. |

Other nutritional supplements found useful for herpes treatment are vitamin C, adenosine, L-lysine, and retinoic acid, a form of vitamin A found in breast milk. Herbal extracts that have lessened or eliminated herpes symptoms include gly-cyrrhizic acid, a component of licorice root; pine cone extracts; tannins; poplar bud extract; lemon balm cream; an infusion from flowers of Sambucus nigra, aerial parts of Hypericum performatum, and roots of Saponaria officinalis; peppermint; and extracts of Cordia salicifolia, Geum japonicum, Rhus javanica, Syzgium aromaticum, and Terminal chebula. |

Helpful nutritional supplements include:
• Magnesium, nature's natural laxative, or trace-mineral tablets rich in magnesium.
Dose: Magnesium—200 to 1,000 mg daily in divided doses. Trace mineral tablets—2 to 6 tablets daily in divided doses.
• Liver-detoxifying formula containing choline, inositol, and taurine, along with herbs such as dandelion and fringe tree. Stronger herbs, such as cascara sagrada and/or mayapple, can be used along with soothing herbs such as marshmallow or slippery elm bark, and with a stimulating herb like ginger or prickly ash bark. |

Nutritional supplements must be used with discretion. Some patients think that if 100 mg. of something is good, 500 mg. is better. This is almost never the case. There is no danger in any of the treatments recommended herein when directions are followed as to amounts and duration of treatment. The suggestions I've made in this book for supplementation are very conservative. Some conditions could require higher doses than those suggested here, but if that's the case I feel you should be under the care of a physician who will supervise your consumption. |
There are several nutritional supplements that I have found successful in treating patients with arthritis. One is the mineral boron. It seems that people who live in places where there is a minimal amount of boron in the soil have a much higher incidence of arthritis. I tell my patients to supplement their diet with boron daily.
The other substance that I've had success with is an amino acid, methionine, which contributes to the creation and repair of cartilage. In one study, it was shown to be even more effective than Motrin in treating the pain of arthritis. |
Fortunately, most adult-onset, Type 2 diabetics can control the disease through a combination of weight loss, a diet high in fiber and complex carbohydrates, nutritional supplements, and adequate exercise. People who are at risk of diabetes because of family history or borderline elevated blood sugar can reduce the risk of getting the disease by following the same regimen.
If you have adult-onset or Type 2 diabetes, or suspect that you do, you have to recognize that it is both good and bad news. The bad news about adult-onset diabetes is that it makes you more vulnerable to a host of ailments. |

A sty usually begins with irritation in the eye. You find yourself rubbing your eye and after a day or two you notice a tiny lump or pimple on the upper or lower lid. The annoying pimple becomes larger and painful until, within a few days, it bursts, and the pain and irritation ceases. The first thing not to do to a sty is to rub or squeeze it.
A sty is in fact an infection in the eyelash follicle or the oil gland. |
But even people who take good care of their nails often have problems with brittle, cracked, and breaking fingernails, conditions that may be helped by diet or nutritional supplements.
Fingernails, which protect the multiple nerve endings in the fingertips, are composed of a protein called keratin. They grow at the rate of about one-eighth inch a month, which means it can take up to three months to grow a new nail. The healthy nail should be smooth, and the nail bed underneath should be pink, indicating a healthy blood supply. |

Frankly, I don't know whether it's the herbs, the nutritional supplements, changes in diet or lifestyle, changes in mind and spirit, or even some conventional protocols. Perhaps it's a combination of all these things. I do know, however, that just as each herb is a complex entity, so too is each individual. Thus, healing with herbs brings us into a realm where physical explanations are not always as clear and scientific as we would like. |
Many of the herbs and nutritional supplements used to treat prostate cancer are especially restorative to the heart as well, as are my dietary and lifestyle guidelines.
RISK FACTORS
Risk factors associated with prostate cancer include:
• Age. Incidence increases with age.
• Race. African-American men have the highest mortality from prostate cancer in the world, although the disease is uncommon among Africans in African countries. A similar statistic applies to Japanese men—those living in Japan have only one-tenth the risk of dying from prostate cancer compared to those who live in America. |
I see many men with prostate cancer and have had a great deal of success in treating this disease (even in advanced stages) using herbs, nutritional supplements, and diet. Many of these men did not use any conventional treatments.
Because natural and holistic protocols for treating prostate cancer work by restoring and detoxifying the body, a significant additional benefit of their use is their ability to inhibit many age-related chronic diseases, such as heart disease. |

If you are on any medications (including herbs and nutritional supplements) or have any chronic disease, slight alterations may be necessary. A physical examination is important before a fast to ensure there are no contraindications and to allow your physician to monitor your progress more effectively.
A positive mental outlook is important. The benefits of fasting include:
• decreased weight
• clearer skin
• increased elimination
• tissue repair
• decreased pain and inflammation
• increased concentration
• relaxation and spare time
• savings in food costs. |

Experts now recommend the value of nutritional supplements, especially in patients who require prolonged TPN support.21 The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) is inadequate for many healthy people and nearly all sick people.
The take-home lesson here is that:
1) at least 20% of Americans are clinically malnourished, with 70% being sub-clinically malnourished (less obvious), and the remaining "chosen few" 10% in good to optimal health. |

® SUMMARY
The number of inflammatory-related diseases that could be successfully treated with cytokine-lowering thetapy is staggering. PTX and supplements such as fish oil, nettle leaf, DHEA, and vitamin K possess mechanisms of suppressing inflammatoty cytokines. Unfortunately, there are no side-by-side comparisons to enable us to categorically state whether PTX or natural agents (such as DHA fish oil) work better. |

The scientific reports that vitamin E may prevent hair loss for patients treated with doxorubicin (Adriamicin), and possibly protect against cardiac damage as well, are one example of a promising nontoxic use of nutritional supplements as an adjunct to conventional therapy.31 expect that adjunctive programs of intensive nutritional support will follow the adjunctive psychosocial approaches into medical mainstream respectability in cancer treatment. |
Livingston—Integrating Diet, nutritional supplements, and Immunotherapy
The story of Virginia C. Livingston, a physician who died in her late eighties in 1990, is at once dramatic and prototypical of those who venture off the path of mainstream cancer medicine. After undertaking some exacting research, she claimed that she had discovered a microbe that caused cancer and then developed a vaccine that she claimed would help control that microbe. Whether or not her claim has any validity has not yet been fully evaluated, although it has been categorically dismissed by mainstream medicine. |
This research raises the issue of whether cancer patients should use nutritional supplements. This, Gawler correctly concludes, is one of the most difficult nutritional areas in which to say anything definitive. His view is that the Gerson diet and some other intensive regimens provide very high levels of needed nutrients in natural forms and balances.
But many cancer patients on intensive programs still use supplements despite the fact that the proponents of the therapies often, in principle, recommend against them. |
Many nutritional cancer therapies use nutritional supplements as well as diet (such as the Livingston program), but others (such as macrobiotics) do not use supplements.
Some nutritional cancer therapies place major emphasis on the inclusion of specific foods known in scientific studies to have anticancer effects (such as Keith Block's nutritional program), while others do not.
Some therapies place emphasis on different foods believed in traditional medicines to have anticancer effects, but these recommendations—as in macrobiotic and Ayurvedic cancer diets—may often be directly contradictory. |
