Zinc, like selenium, is widely taken as a supplement by many people interested in nutritional supplements. A mineral that is essential to life, it plays a key role in cell replication, tissue repair, and growth. Zinc-deficient children are frequently small in stature. Marginal zinc deficiency is suspected to be quite widespread in the United States. Pronounced zinc deficiency depresses immune function in both humans and animals.70
Zinc can both enhance and retard tumor growth. |
If the patient asks whether there is any evidence that diet or nutritional supplements might affect the course of the cancer, most oncologists would answer with an emphatic no.
When someone asks a nutritionally oriented alternative cancer therapist what to do about diet, the therapist will usually prescribe a detailed and often rigorous nutritional program. If the patient asks whether there is any evidence that the diet might affect the course of the cancer, the therapist is likely to answer emphatically yes. |

This seems to hold true for people, since heavy drinkers have been able to break the habit—and even lose interest—with the right diet and proper nutritional supplements. Vitamins A, D, E, C, and all the B vitamins—especially B12, B6, and Bl—along with calcium and magnesium, choline, inositol, niacin, and a very high-protein diet have brought about the best results. Dr. H. L. Newbold, of New York, who has worked with alcoholics, recommends building up to 5 glutamine capsules

CASTOR BEAN
(Ricinus communis)
Brief Description
Castor bean responds very well to heat and humidity. The hotter and moister the climate, the taller it becomes, taking on tree-size proportions of 30-40 feet tall. In countries of more moderate warmth and less humidity, it is of more slender growth, averaging only 10 to 15 feet in height. |

ImmunoPower is the most clinically-tested, cost-effective and convenient way to take nutritional supplements.
3) Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) There are many cancer patients who are so malnourished (weight loss of 10% below usual body weight within 1 month period and/or serum albumin below 2.5 mg/dl) that we must interrupt this deterioration with TPN. When the patient cannot or will not eat adequately, TPN can be an invaluable life raft during crucial phases of cancer treatment.

Researchers at Tulane University compared survival in patients who used the macrobiotic diet versus patients who continued — with their standard Western lifestyle. Of 1467 pancreatic patients who made no changes in diet, 146 (1%) were alive after one year, while 12 of the 23 matched pancreatic patients (52%) consuming macrobiotic foods were still alive after one year. |
Experts now recommend the value of nutritional supplements, especially in patients who require prolonged TPN support.
WHY USE NUTRITION AS PART OF COMPREHENSIVE CANCER TREATMENT?
1) Avoiding malnutrition
40% or more of cancer patients actually die from malnutrition, not from the cancer.17 Nutrition therapy is essential to arrest malnutrition. Among the more effective non-nutritional approaches to reverse cancer cachexia is hydrazine sulfate. Hydrazine sulfate is a relatively non-toxic drug that shuts down energy metabolism in cancer cells. |

Golde's fears are a reflection of the prevailing attitude among many oncologists, who use drugs of exceptionally high toxicity, but balk at their patients' use of non-toxic nutritional supplements.
Iron Overload?
There is one area in which I think that concerns over vitamin C intake may be justified. About one in 5,000 people of Northern European descent has a hereditary disorder called hemochromatosis. Such people have a genetic mutation that results in excessive iron absorption. |

Supplemental Insurance against Pain
As with osteoarthritis, certain nutritional supplements and herbs may help protect your joints against rheumatoid arthritis. You might want to add some of the following to your preventive program. fish oil. If you're not especially fond of fish, you can get your omega-3 fatty acids from supplements. Andrew Weil, M.D. |
While nutritional supplements can't compensate for a poor diet, they can provide added insurance when you're feeling stressed or anxious. You may want to take extra zinc and the antioxidant nutrients: vitamins C and E, beta-carotene, and the mineral selenium. The B vitamins are important, too, since research suggests that they're depleted by chronic stress.
Rather than taking a fistful of individual pills, perhaps your best bet is to choose one good-quality daily multivitamin/mineral supplement. Look for a formula that contains extra amounts of the antioxidants.
Reduce your caffeine intake. |
So I not only defended herbs and nutritional supplements, I also criticized the FDA for its labeling requirements. At the time, the agency required manufacturers to spend tens of millions of dollars on research to substantiate label claims on their new drugs. The FDA defined a new drug as anything that it hadn't already approved—for example, prunes for constipation.
I suggested that the producer ask Dr. Kessler whether he considered prunes and prune juice effective laxatives. If Dr. |

I will also present the latest findings of sophisticated neuro-imaging techniques that reveal how dietary change and use of select nutritional supplements can repair faulty brain circuitry to help AD/HD sufferers of any age sharpen their ability to learn and to increase concentration, focus, and memory. I will show you how to identify the foods that are contributing to your own or your child's problem, how to substitute better choices, and how to balance brain function by choosing when to eat specific groups of foods depending on whether you wish to optimize alertness or promote sleepiness. |
I first met Marcia several years ago after one of her lectures in Baltimore and recognized that she was a first-rate educator as well as an expert in nutrition and the formulation of nutritional supplements. She is well versed in the chemistry of the body, which makes her extremely well qualified to speak out and give sober, nonhysterical advice on this troublesome disorder and, most important, a well-thought-out day-today practical plan, which at long last may help erase the underlying causes of ADD, not just its symptoms.
New scientific findings endorse this approach. |

An extra positive benefit is that vitamins rarely ever make matters worse, although they may have many effects, even including diarrhea or other detoxification symptoms. |

Today, research indicates that people can have "mild" or "moderate" nutrient deficiencies and that nutritional supplements are necessary to maintain health, according to nutritionist D. Lindsey Berkson, M.A., D.C, of Santa Fe, New Mexico. These mild deficiencies may not cause tangible health disorders, making them difficult to diagnose, but can result in a variety of symptoms along with a general decrease in wellness. Unaddressed, these deficiencies can often put the body at risk for future health problems. |

This sensitivity apparently can be improved, and the set point lowered, by exercise, a specially designed diet, and several nutritional supplements which are discussed below. The set point theory suggests that a diet that does not improve insulin sensitivity will most likely fail to provide long-term results.
Increasing the body's sensitivity to insulin results in less insulin being secreted. |

The foundation of nutritional medicine is a health-promoting diet which focuses on the consumption of whole, natural foods. nutritional supplements are used in the overall context of nutritional medicine as complementary agents, not as sole primary medicines. Diet is always primary, and supplementation secondary.
There is an ever-growing appreciation of the major role diet plays in determining the level of health. It is now well-established that certain dietary practices cause, as well as prevent, a wide range of diseases. |
The growing popularity of nutritional supplementation
Growing numbers of Americans are taking nutritional supplements, with one industry source estimating a growth rate of 25% per annum for the past 5 years. Over 100 million Americans now take dietary supplements on a regular basis. Despite the tremendous body of research supporting the use of nutritional supplementation, most medical experts and researchers have still not publicly endorsed nutritional supplementation even though 98% of them take supplements themselves. |

The thyroid extracts sold as "nutritional supplements" are required by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be thyroxine-free. However, it is nearly impossible to remove all the hormone from the gland. In other words, think of these nutritional thyroid preparations as milder forms of desiccated natural thyroid.
The primary use of thyroid preparations is in the medical treatment of hypothyroidism. In all but its most mildest forms, treatment involves the use of desiccated thyroid or synthetic thyroid hormone. For more discussion, see Chapter 162. |

After injury or before and after surgery, extra nutritional supplements may be very helpful in supporting rapid healing. Minimally, vitamin A, vitamin C, and zinc can help tissue repair and very likely lessen the chance of infection following injuries or surgery. A full supplement program may be even more helpful. I think that with proper application of supplements and observation, many surgeons would be impressed with general recovery and wound healing in their patients taking additional "vitamins" before and after surgery. |

The oil-soluble vitamins, such as A, D, E, and K, are available and advisable in "dry" or water-soluble form for people who tend to get upset stomachs from oil, for acne sufferers or anyone with a skin condition where oil ingestion is not advised, and for dieters who have cut most of the fat from their meals. |
