A new breed of food-based substances and natural compounds has emerged as exciting new nutritional supplements to participate in this new healing age. MSM is one of them.
Chapter Three
How to Take MSM
SM is a nutritional supplement with many nurturing and health-enhancing properties. If you are under treatment for any condition that is mentioned in this book, we recommend that you bring our observations to your physician's attention and obtain his or her professional opinion regarding your use of the supplement. |
These are health professionals who employ many different nutritional supplements in their healing protocols. They often tell us that when they add MSM to an already existing program for a patient they see accelerated healing and marked improvements, often in cases that have been resistant to other treatments.
One physician, for instance, mentioned this accelerating repair effect of MSM for a number of his most difficult patients who had degenerative and rheumatoid arthritis and other musculoskeletal problems. |
All drugs or other nutritional supplements were stopped prior to the study.
All patients in the study reported improvemenr while taking MSM, except for one. At the four-week mark, patients on MSM described an average 60 percent improvement; at six weeks, 82 percent. As is typical in medical studies, people on placebos usually report benefits. In this case, the placebo takers described an improvement of 20 percent on average at four weeks and an 18 percent improvement at six weeks. |

They've prepared themselves for it, they've exercised throughout pregnancy (which is a new notion), and they've taken strategic nutritional supplements.
For years, many women felt alienated from their reproductive organs, as if they had been appropriated by the medical establishment. Gradually, the tide has been turning. An important approach has been developing in our culture. It favors more natural childbirth, gentler and less invasive techniques for dealing with women's problems, and greater respect for women's reproductive organs that is borne out of true empathy and a greater knowledge. |

Although precious little has been published in medical literature concerning the successful use of nutritional supplements for eczema, a study in the Lancet (November 20, 1982) reports good results (an overall improvement of 43 percent) among a group of adults taking evening primrose oil, six capsules twice daily. Other important skin nutrients are vitamins A, B complex and E, and zinc. An appropriate amount for zinc might be 50 milligrams a day for a few weeks; after that, try to cut back to half that amount. |

Along with the interest in diet has come a focus on nutritional supplements as people search for ways to feel better and stay healthy.
Supplements are a $6 billion-a-year business. As many as 70 per cent of people take them at least occasionally, and almost every mall has a health food store filled with products that promise to relieve pain, help you sleep better and boost your health, vitality and virility.
But many people still have questions. What do vitamins and minerals do? Am I getting enough from the food I eat? Should I take supplements? Which ones should I take and how much? |
Vitamin D2 is the form most commonly added to foods and nutritional supplements. These forms of vitamin D are converted in the liver and kidneys to the hormone, calcitriol, which is the physiologically active form of vitamin D.
What it does in the body
Bones and teeth
The most important role of vitamin D is to maintain blood calcium levels within an acceptable range. |
The total amount spent on foods and pill supplements for health benefits was $6 billion. nutritional supplements are big business and marketing hype often starts where the scientific evidence ends.
Those who use supplements tend to be older, have higher income and higher education levels. However, statistics also show that those with higher nutrient intakes are more likely to take vitamin supplements. This means that, in many cases, supplements are taken most often by those who need them least. |
Algae: spirulina and chlorella
Algae are green, or 'blue-green' freshwater, one-celled organisms that can be grown, dried, and used as nutritional supplements.
What they do in the body
They are high in protein and contain all the amino acids. Spirulina is also a good source of iron, potassium, beta carotene and essential fatty acids. Some research suggests that the human body may not be able to absorb the form of vitamin B12 found in spirulina, and it may even block true vitamin B12 absorption. |
There is a vast range of vitamin, mineral and other nutritional supplements available in supermarkets, health food stores and drugstores. Products vary widely in quality and effectiveness, and evidence to support some of the claims made by those who sell them is inconclusive at best.
Most supplement manufacturers follow good manufacturing practices, which ensure that the product contains what it says on the label; that it breaks down to a form which is available for absorption; and does not contain toxic chemicals. If in doubt, it is worth checking with the supplier. |

Lutein and zeaxanthin are found in green and yellow vegetables and in nutritional supplements made from the petals of marigold flowers.
Prevent Thinning Bones and Fractures
Osteoporosis was once considered a normal part of aging, with general acceptance of the stooped, shortened stature suffered by the elderly. Today, osteoporosis is a major public-health problem, one that lies at the root of much unnecessary suffering and debility in otherwise healthy older adults. |

From early on, the Hoxsey method has offered substantial "supportive treatment" including a diet, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and other miscellaneous therapies. The approaches are both physical and spiritual.
The Hoxsey diet is relatively simple compared with many anticancer diets. Much of it is founded in excluding foods that are believed to counteract the activity of the tonic, based on empirical experience. Patients are barred from eating pork, vinegar, tomatoes, lard, carbonated beverages, processed white sugar, white flour, and alcohol. |

Now the FDA is expanding its role into treatments not generally considered to be drugs, such as vitamins and nutritional supplements, and also into medical devices.
Doctors who fear the OSHA inspector, who is armed with a manual for assessing fines, had better be even more certain not to cross the FDA. The FDA uses guns.
Unproved treatments can kill—so can proved treatments but never mind. Therefore, to protect us against unproved treatments, the government is prepared to kill. |

Pregnant women and nursing mothers should take the nutritional supplements prescribed by their doctors.
If you are a vegetarian, you will be replacing the meat with vegetable protein, something you know how to do already. Since there are relatively small amounts of meat in this diet, you may find this easier to do than with some other programs. But make sure that you are eating an adequate supply of omega-3 fatty acids. One survey showed that vegetarians have one-half the amount of omega-3s in their tissues as omnivores1—in the United States that means one-half of far too little! |

I get the feeling that Pritikin doesn't approve of nutritional supplements because that might suggest that his program is not 100 percent perfect in every detail. When I spoke with a physician who had worked with Pritikin at his California Center, he suggested another reason for Pritikin's disdain of supplements: If people on the program took them, then any improvement in health they obtained might be attributable to the supplements rather than to the diet itself. So to "prove his point," as it were, supplements were given the thumbs-down. |
That physician, by the way, advises a broad range of nutritional supplements for patients, feeling that they can only help.
In attempting to defend his beliefs, Pritikin seems not to be above citing research findings of dubious merit. For instance, in defending his stance on calcium, he declares that "the World Health Organization has been unable to document a single case of calcium deficiency! |

Patients are then put on an intensive detoxification program. nutritional supplements are given. The patient begins autohemotherapy. This involves the removal of blood from the body, so it can be filled with ozone, then reinfused.
After five days of autohemotherapy, Dr. Pittman says, "if the patient has tolerated that... we begin with the direct intravenous infusion of ozone gas... on a daily basis, gradually increasing concentrations and volume until we observe a healing crisis in the patient." The patient will experience fevers, chills, and sometimes flu symptoms. |

In comparison, only 6 of the 39 PMT patients ingested nutritional supplements on a regular basis.
"Among the trace elements studied: Copper, selenium and chromium intakes were not different among the two groups.... However, the normal women consume on the average twice as much iron and zinc, four times as much manganese as the PMT patients."
The sensible thing to do, in light of these findings, would be to cut back on sugar, salt, refined carbohydrates and dairy products to see if that helps. Bolster the B vitamins and be sure to get key nutrients at all times of the month. |

Drug/Nutrient Interactions
The table of Drug/Nutrient Interactions on the following pages summarizes information on how drugs affect nutrient status and which nutritional supplements may interfere with optimal drug benefits. This field is still evolving and we expect more information to become available over the next several years. (The table does not include discussion of most cancer drugs, however, as these are administered primarily in the hospital under close supervision. Many of them have significant effects on nutritional status, but in some cases that contributes to their effectiveness. |

The very definition of what is in fact old is changing daily, and the treatments that are giving so many people added years of life are the new interventions and therapeutics of anti-aging medicine—a combination of hormone replacement therapy, nutritional supplements, high-dose antioxidants and vitamins, a custom-designed exercise/rehabilitation program, and a revolution in personal attitude. |
You'll learn about hormone treatments, nutritional supplements, diet, and exercise programs that can help prolong the pleasures of youth. There are multitudes of 70-year-olds performing, thinking, and feeling every bit as well as when they were 55. |
People who are physically fit, eat a healthy, balanced diet, and take nutritional supplements, can measure out to be 10 to 20 years biologically younger than their chronological age—this is what makes an immortal. An immortal doesn't necessarily live forever, but can be free from mental and physical disease and degeneration for years longer than an unhealthy individual. And exercise is an extremely important part of achieving this "immortality. |
By the same token, nutritional supplements and other treatments covered in this book can help reverse the aging process by stimulating the body's own ability to repair and maintain its organs and cells.
2. The Neuroendocrine Theory
This theory, developed by Vladimir Dilman, Ph.D., elaborates on the wear and tear theory by focusing on the neuroendocrine system, the complicated network of biochemicals that governs the release of our hormones and other vital bodily elements. |
We've also explored a range of nutritional supplements, lifestyle choices, and hormonal treatments that can slow, ease, or even reverse the aging process. But perhaps the most powerful anti-aging weapon that you have is your mind.
A hormone produced by stress, Cortisol, is associated with a dozen or more serious degenerative diseases and has been found in some studies to be present in elevated levels in the last days of life. |
Although you can do much on your own to improve your diet and find some of the nutritional supplements you need, a qualified professional will be better able to analyze your problems, chart your course to optimum health and follow your programs with objective lab tests and medical intuition.
Here are the personal life extension programs of 28 pioneers in the new science of anti-aging medicine. These hardy souls are the founders, the leaders, the educators, the discoverers and the promoters who over the past 40 years have created the basis for the next age of health care in the new millennium. |

5. From earliest times, honey bee pollen has been regarded as a valuable food source for promoting health, strength, and longevity.
6. Honey bee pollen is sold commercially in many different forms; therefore, when using any of these products it is best to follow the directions given on the bottles or cartons regarding the daily amount to be taken.
7. Only the best quality of honey bee pollen should be used.

Once you reach your mid-twenties, you need the diet and nutritional supplements, exercise, and stress management to stave off aging. Just imagine what is possible if you integrate the entire program into your life while you're in your twenties, thirties, or even forties!
Yes, I can teach you how to retard and even reverse aging even if you're in what is statistically old age. I've even developed a repair and rejuvenation protocol that has proved affective in reversing ailments in people over sixty. |
In the course of the protocol, I have lost fifteen pounds, almost without effort, just by eliminating meat and dairy products, wheat, chicken, turkey, and by drinking the green juice daily and eating only organic food. The nutritional supplements have also been helpful.
The exercise program has also helped. I could have done even better, if it was not for some interruptions in the exercise and time spent outside of New York on two occasions when I could not apply the protocol. |

Solving Some Symptoms and Signs with Supplements
Some simple nutritional supplements should solve the following conditions:
SCALP:
Dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis: Too much sugar. Need essential fatty acids, B-complex, especially B6 and paraminobenzoic acid, and selenium.
Thinning hair: On estrogen? Use B6, folate, check for low thyroid and low stomach acid.
Much head perspiration: Vitamin D deficiency.
EARS:
Excess wax: Need essential fatty acids. Cracks behind ears: Need B6 and zinc.
Crease across the lobe: Possible susceptibility to cardiovascular disease. |
