In general, besides reducing the concentration of excitotoxins themselves, there are three major areas in which nutritional supplements may help in preventing damage by excitotoxins: 1) reducing the production of "bad"eicosanoids; 2) reducing free radical damage and 3) improving energy production.

So you don't need any calcium supplements—or any other nutritional supplements, either. Only when the percentage of calories in the diet from protein sources rises above 16 percent, he believes, will you go into negative calcium balance.
Well, that may make sense in theory, but in one careful Canadian study of a group of people on the Pritikin diet, it was found that the participants were in reality obtaining some 15 to 20 percent of their calories from protein—more than enough, according to Pritikin—to produce losses of calcium. |

These are health professionals who employ many different nutritional supplements in their healing protocols. They often tell us that when they add MSM to an already existing program for a patient they see accelerated healing and marked improvements, often in cases that have been resistant to other treatments.
One physician, for instance, mentioned this accelerating repair effect of MSM for a number of his most difficult patients who had degenerative and rheumatoid arthritis and other musculoskeletal problems. |

CORRECTING A DEFICIENCY Americans consume the greatest number of nutritional supplements in the world; to Europeans we're something of a joke in this regard. Taking in fatty acids as supplements is no magic formula; they have to be utilized in the body, and that requires a balance of vitamins and minerals. In fact, without using oil supplements, it's possible to increase the efficiency with which your body uses essential fatty acids by taking extra zinc and B vitamins. Many people have a problem absorbing and metabolizing fatty acids, as noted above. |

It was evident from the many booths and displays in the hallways that, unknown to most of us, there exists a small empire of alternative health products and publications. nutritional supplements of every imaginable kind were promoted. Two different manufacturers of egg lecithin were earnestly challenging each other's claims to have the purest and most effective product. Publications of the Cancer Control Society, the Journal of Orthomo-lecular Medicine, F.R.O.N.T., etc. were on display.
A Japanese man at the Sun Chlorella booth urged me to try some little green pills. |
Some of the remedies, practices, or nutritional supplements may not have a sound scientific basis, but at least they were gentle therapies. Nothing featured at the conference even remotely approached the toxicity of AZT.
The people at the conference seemed committed to the concept of health, and (unlike New York City doctors) appeared themselves to be healthy. Most of them were at least open to the idea that HIV is not the cause of AIDS.
The Los Angeles Symposium represented a major step forward in establishing an optimistic approach to "AIDS", and in fostering free and open dialogue. |
PH promoted and sold nutritional supplements, some being "demonstrably dangerous".
Most of the document consists of unsubstantiated innuendoes attacking Cass Mann and other members of PH. |
All PH did was to organize a buyers club in order to offer high-quality, high-potency nutritional supplements known as "Imu-Power Packs", which they sell at about $1.70 per day, which is slightly above the wholesale cost. One could debate the benefits of the many components of the Imu-Power Packs, but there is nothing in them that is harmful, and they are not expensive relative to ordinary medicines (or the price of a beer or package of cigarettes). The only valid objection Campbell makes to the Imu-Power Packs is that one would have to swallow about 65 pills a day. |

Within this overall medical shift a new attitude has developed toward nutritional supplements. Prior to 1990, vitamins and minerals were viewed narrowly by most physicians as necessary elements contained in food that prevented nutritional deficiency states such as scurvy, beriberi, rickets, and pellagra. The prevailing attitude held that supplementation was unnecessary because a balanced diet was supposed to provide all the good nutrition our bodies needed. |

A healthy diet; nutritional supplements; avoiding smoking, alcohol and caffeine; adequate sleep; and exercise all play an important role in helping the immune system to work well. Stress reduction is also very important. Research has shown that severe life stress increases the risk of early progression of disease in those who are HIV-positive.1
Many HIV-positive people use alternative treatments such as relaxation, touch, spiritual and selfhelp therapies. Herbal medicine, acupuncture, homeopathy and dietary therapies are also popular. |

All drugs or other nutritional supplements were stopped prior to the study.
All patients in the study reported improvement while taking MSM, except for one. At the four-week mark, patients on MSM described an average 60 percent improvement; at six weeks, 82 percent. As is typical in medical studies, people on placebos usually report benefits. In this case, the placebo takers described an improvement of 20 percent on average at four weeks and an 18 percent improvement at six weeks. |

The patient may not realize that antacids, laxatives, and, most important, nutritional supplements should also be shunned. Few physicians and pharmacists realize how many women now swallow calcium pills to prevent osteoporosis. In addition, they may be taking vitamin and mineral supplements with iron, magnesium, and zinc. These minerals can all bind to tetracycline, forming an insoluble precipitate and preventing the drug's absorption if they are taken with it. How many people take their supplements and antibiotic together? |

A new breed of food-based substances and natural compounds has emerged as exciting new nutritional supplements to participate in this new healing age. MSM is one of them.
Chapter Three
How to Take MSM
SM is a nutritional supplement with many nurturing and health-enhancing properties. If you are under treatment for any condition that is mentioned in this book, we recommend that you bring our observations to your physician's attention and obtain his or her professional opinion regarding your use of the supplement. |
That's because nutritional supplements, based on vitamins, minerals, herbs, and natural substances such as MSM, are not patentable.
The major impetus behind MSM's growing popularity is word of mouth. As people experience the healing benefits of MSM, we find they often become enthusiastic emissaries eager to tell family members and friends who have pain problems. One such example is Father Sam, a 46-year-old parish priest in rural Pennsylvania. An avid jogger who has also enjoyed lifting weights in the past, he suffered two sports injuries that left him with a bad shoulder and bad knees. |

2) What is the dose?_
3) What time(s) should I take this medicine?

Treating nutritional supplements casually or keeping them a secret from the physician could be a mistake, however. Some medications are known to interact with minerals or vitamins in a negative manner, but the doctor or pharmacist probably won't think to give you advice on avoiding these dangers unless he or she knows you take vitamins. |
How Supplements Affect Drugs
Doctors and pharmacists are unquestionably interested in one type of interaction between nutrients and drugs. When nutritional supplements interfere with a medication and make it less effective, they tend to sit up and take notice. You should, too, because taking a medicine with supplements that counteract it is a waste of money and potentially damaging to your health. One of the clearest examples of such an interaction is tetracycline and calcium.
Mineral Supplements and Tetracycline
Tetracycline is one of the most commonly prescribed antibiotics in the world. |
Willett point out that we can't even be sure that low B-vitamin levels are responsible for high homocysteine, but "several investigators have demonstrated that elevated levels of homocysteine can often be normalized with nutritional supplements, particularly with folate; thus, the associations observed by Selhub et al. are very likely to be causal. "4 So far as we know, researchers have not yet examined the possibility that many of these medications might be indirectly connected to high homocysteine levels and an elevated risk of heart attack. This appears theoretically possible, though. |

The same is true of natural remedies and nutritional supplements. One gram of MSM may give you a shot of energy but your brother may need five grams to feel the same effect.
Over the years, thousands of patients have experienced healing benefits by taking 2 to 8 grams (2,000 to 8,000 milligrams) of MSM a day, the amount depending on their gastrointestinal (or GI) tolerance and their condition.
For general maintenance and health, a dosage of around 2 grams (2,000 milligrams) or less is usually adequate.
Higher doses are typically necessary to experience therapeutic effects. |

Hypertension (p. 89) (high blood pressure) is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and the risk increases as blood pressure rises.6 Glucose intolerance and diabetes (p. 53) constitute a separate risk factor for heart disease. Smoking potentiates the risk of heart disease caused by hypertension.
Abdominal fat or a "beer belly," versus fat that accumulates on the hips, is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease and heart attack.7 Overweight individuals are more likely to have additional risk factors related to heart disease, specifically hypertension (p. |

Innuendos (rather than promises) of far-reaching benefits persist on many product labels. Such implicit claims are beyond reach of the law, however, because they are indirect rather than explicit. Claims are couched, for example, in comments from satisfied users who describe how the product cured their illness or produced other benefits.
Although the public needs the protection provided by accurate labeling, proof of safety, and evidence of benefit, the food supplement industry effectively prevented legislation from passage in the U.S. Congress in 1994. |

To understand how alternative home remedies work, you need to know a little about the gallbladder. This small, pear-shaped organ stores bile, a liquid produced by the liver for digesting fats. When bile becomes too concentrated while sitting in the gallbladder, hard, crystal-like stones can form. (Eighty percent of gallstones are made of cholesterol; the other 20 percent are made of calcium salts and the pigment bilirubin.) People who are overweight are much more likely to form gallstones than those who are lean. |

Chromium is one of your key supplements when you need better blood sugar control. The people who make those awful bottled "natural" fruit drinks and teas aren't going to like this, but it's possible that the steep rise in our consumption of high fructose corn syrup has contributed to the rise in diabetes by depleting chromium. |

While I will target only those risk factors that are known to specifically affect the brain, it is important that you realize that the majority of these factors are involved in other disease processes, particularly the degenerative diseases associated with aging. Thus, by following the 10-step program presented in Part Two, you'll improve not only your memory and brainpower, but your overall health as well. Your blood pressure and cholesterol will likely drop, thus reducing your risk of stroke and heart disease. Your chances of developing diabetes will decrease, and your weight may normalize. |

One of my patients, a professional in his late forties, experienced severe and nearly intolerable side effects of combination therapy, including nausea and vomiting, headaches, debilitating fatigue, insomnia, and depression and mood changes. Within two treatments of acupuncture and herbal remedies, the nausea and headaches were completely gone; he was sleeping better and had more energy. By the end of six weeks, the side effects were controlled enough for him to return to work.
