In some cases, substances called secretagogues can stimulate hormonal secretion, or hormonal precursors (the chemical building blocks from which hormones are constructed) can be added to your nutritional supplement program to improve hormonal status. In addition, if hormonal activity is very low, each hormone has a bio-identical pharmaceutical counterpart that can be prescribed, if necessary, by a medical or osteopathic doctor.
Therefore, if you have hormone imbalances, there is no need to go untreated. |

Coenzyme Q10
Slow, sluggish, lethargic, dull—this is how you feel when you're tired and your energy level is low. This same state could describe what happens at the cellular level when your mitochondria, the powerhouses that fuel each of your cells, do not produce adequate energy. The result is a general slowdown in the cells and decrease in optimal function. One nutrient that is essential for energy production in every cell of your body is coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10). |

I recommend, though, that you consult your vet before starting any supplement program. Ask him or her about this regimen:
Vitamin C, 500-1,000 mg. (sodium ascorbate or some other form of buffered vitamin C; plain ascorbic acid may cause stomach upset.)
4-5 alfalfa tablets (helps reduce inflammation)
Vitamin E, 100-200 IU (liquid or powder)
Selenium, 25-50 meg. (depending on size of dog)
Glucosamine, 500 mg.
Ev.Ext-33, 1 capsule daily (2 capsules daily for dogs over
100 pounds) Mix with food daily.

There are many nutrients that have proven valuable in treating diabetes.
B Vitamins: Levels of vitamin B& in the body drop sharply after the age of 50, when Type II diabetes is most likely to occur.28 Vitamin B6 taken daily can reduce insulin need and improve basic health.29 Type II diabetics regained normal blood sugar levels with doses of 100 mg daily of vitamin B6 in tests by John Ellis, M.D., who recommends 50 mg daily for maintenance. |

| His nutritional supplement program for a typical hypertensive patient includes fish oil, garlic, evening primrose oil, magnesium, potassium, selenium, zinc, vitamin B6, niacin, vitamin C, tryptophan, taurine, cysteine, and coenzyme Q10.
Studies have shown that nutritional supplementation, particularly with potassium, calcium, and magnesium (nonchloride salts), along with antioxidants and zinc, can help reduce hypertension.
Sodium and Potassium: In order to reduce blood pressure, sodium intake must be restricted while potassium intake is increased. |

Why you should take supplements no matter how well you eat, how to choose the best supplement program for you, answers to the most-asked questions on supplements, and the fifteen nutrients you can't do without (chapter 14).
How to Break the Cycle
The basic premise of this book is that you not only are what you eat, but you also eat what you are. Your food choices have profound effects on your energy level, mood, sleep habits, ability to cope with stress, and more. On the other hand, how you feel is intricately linked to what you choose to eat from one meal to the next. |

Avoid the Glitz
Although the debates continue over what is best, when it comes to supplements, your best bet usually is to stick with the basics and avoid the glitz. Here's a crash course on label lingo.
Time-released vitamins: Theoretically, these supplements should raise and maintain blood levels of a vitamin better than regular supplements. In reality, most time-released tablets dissolve too slowly to be completely absorbed. |

It's best if you can work with a physician or nutritionist to develop a mineral supplement program that's right for you. Remember to use caution, keep within the recommended doses, and stay aware of how you feel. Learning how to listen to your body and its responses can be one of the most important side effects of your anti-aging campaign! |

Basically, her supplement program consists of safe, moderate levels of just about all vitamins and minerals. Judging by some letters that Ms. Hull has published in her "Lupus Lifeline," this across-the-board approach to bolstering nutrition sometimes pay off in dramatic improvement. At least that's what the people say who have tried it.
Those who have lupus should keep in mind that remissions that may last for years are common. Have a hopeful outlook, because many who were terribly ill have recovered to enjoy many years of near-normal health.

| The person who works on a supplement program and ignores the daily diet of whole foods is like a runner who spends more time selecting a pair of track shoes than actually training.
In trying to describe an optimum diet of whole foods, we are once again talking about a very general approach that might be followed in the absence of special needs. I don't believe in urging everyone not to eat wheat or milk or egg yolks simply because a relatively small minority will develop allergies or high cholesterol levels. |

During the trip, Cassie abandoned her supplement program and the quality of the food she was given to eat was extremely poor. Cassie tumbled down rapidly. In response to the stress and her fragile mental state, she began self-mutilating and came back with words carved deeply into her skin. She was smoking, drinking, and defiant. In the next few months, she tumbled even further into destructive behaviors, including experimenting with drugs and occultism, and she finally ran away from home. |
| I started him out on a carefully chosen supplement program, designed to reduce his anxiety (magnesium, B complex), and recommended dietary changes. I selected fairly high doses of zinc to help reduce his anger and aggression. I recommended essential fatty acids and a well-balanced multivitamin and mineral supplement. Most of the supplements were to be taken in the morning for energy; others were to be taken in the evening to help him sleep.
Jake also completed a "Profile of Mood States" (POMS) questionnaire so we would have an objective means of assessing his progress. |
| At the very least, you will need to follow the diet and supplement program listed in the previous chapter for teenagers, supplementing with a high-quality multivitamin and mineral supplement and essential fats. I recommend that you include two to four tablespoons of raw, organic oils in your diet each day. Use fish oil capsules, flaxseed capsules, or add flaxseed oil to a breakfast protein drink, or use raw olive oil on your freshly prepared salad each day.
If you are struggling with mental issues, read the next chapter carefully. |

Given the low toxicity of manganese and the potentially important role that it plays in human health, I believe it is prudent to incorporate 5 milligrams daily (adults) in one's supplement program. Doses higher than 10 milligrams daily are not recommended.
B) Source/Form: The best dietary sources of manganese include whole grains and nuts. Fruits and green vegetables contain moderate amounts, content depending upon the soil in which the crops were grown. The more alkaline the soil the less manganese there will be in the food. |

Use the following guide when planning your supplement program:
Regardless of how you did in the above deficiency quiz, everyone needs to take a daily multivitamin that provides an adequate amount of all essential micronutrients. Consult your local nutritionist for recommendations on a supplement that will be appropriate for you. It should contain more than just RDA levels of nutrients, and it should provide for nutrients that are not covered in the RDA/RDI.
If you checked many of the symptoms in the above lists, you should consider providing a little more of these individual nutrients. |

Longdistance runners should add 10-15 mg of iron daily to their supplement program if it is not already included. Adequate riboflavin is present in the basic formulas (enough to cover any additional need of a female athlete). The basic formulas also include adequate magnesium for all athletes.
2) L-tyrosine. Many athletes, especially those subjected to hypoxic conditions, such as those at high altitude, may profit from supplementary L-tyrosine. Start with 500 milligrams three times daily about thirty minutes to one hour before meals or on an empty stomach. |

| I placed Sally on a nutritional supplement program consisting of high doses of antioxidants with extra vitamin E, B-complex vitamins, essential fatty acids, and other nutrients that target the brain. I also gave her a vitamin B12 injection and continued giving her twice-a-week injections for the next month.
When Sally and her daughter returned a month later, I looked into the eyes of a different woman. She was alert, smiling, and made pleasant small talk. Her daughter said that her mother's mood and memory were so much improved that they were no longer considering a nursing home. |
| Step 4—Nurture Your Brain With Fats
A basic nutritional supplement program should also include omega-3 fatty acids, especially the "smart fat" docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The best sources are fish oil capsules (two 1,000-milligram capsules per day—each containing approximately 120 milligrams of DHA), or algae-derived DHA (100 to 200 milligrams daily). Freshly ground flaxseed (V4 cup) or flaxseed oil (lV2 to 3 tablespoons) is also good.
Try phosphatidyl serine in a dose of 300 milligrams a day for one month, then taper down to 100 milligrams. |

Extra iron and calcium are useful additions to a routine supplement program. The only caution is taking too much vitamin A during the first 3 months. Anything above 10,000 IU may be too much, but this only applies to preformed vitamin A, not to beta-carotene.
How to Store Supplements
You do not need to take special precautions when storing most dietary supplements. It is usually sufficient to keep them on a shelf in a pantry or on the kitchen counter. Most of the products are quite stable if kept in dry, room-temperature conditions. |

| Finally, a person is well-advised to take a supplement program designed for his or her own particular needs; and only a doctor can determine what these particular needs are. The Alliance for Aging Research recommendations for daily intake levels are vitamin C, 250-1,000 mg; vitamin E, 100-400 mg; and beta-carotene, 10-30 mg. They also recommend that a physician always be consulted to supervise this program. |

Two to the Rescue
Because the pair works best by preserving the cartilage you have left, don't wait until you're in agonizing pain to start on a supplement program, advises Dr. Das. If you've been diagnosed with arthritis, get your doctor's approval first, then take 500 milligrams of glucosamine and 400 milligrams of chondroitin sulfate twice a day, says Dr. Das. From the time you start the double dose, allow from two weeks to four months to let the supplements do their work. You can continue to take them indefinitely.

Boost Your Brain with B Vitamins
Most of the B vitamins play a role in brain function. They help the breakdown of blood sugar, or glucose. Since the brain relies on a perpetual supply of glucose for energy, this is very important, Dr. Khalsa says.
Deficiencies of both vitamin B12 and folic acid have been associated with memory loss. When someone complains of problems with memory, a doctor usually begins an examination by checking for deficiencies of these vitamins, Dr. Khalsa says. |
| Think of brewer's yeast as an additional supplement, not as a replacement for whole foods and a comprehensive supplement program."
When it's grown with vitamin B12, brewer's yeast is the supplement of choice for some vegetarians, especially vegans (strict vegetarians who eat no meat, fish, poultry, eggs, or dairy products). "There are very few natural vegan sources of B12 except certain forms of brewer's yeast," says Jennifer Brett, N.D., a naturopathic doctor at the Wilton Naturopathic Center in Stratford, Connecticut. |
