Natural Testosterone Dosages and Recommendations
When supplementing with testosterone, I recommend only natural testosterone (not the synthetic derivatives of testosterone) because it more closely mimics the body's own production of testosterone. Doses for women usually average 2-10mg/day. For men, doses usually range from 40-120mg/day. I prefer to use testosterone in cream form, as it is well absorbed through the skin. I recommend USP grade, micronized natural testosterone, which can easily be made by a compounding pharmacist. |
| For arthritic patients, the most common minerals I recommend supplementing are the following:
1. Magnesium Magnesium is essential for catalyzing hundreds of reactions in the body. A diet high in carbohydrates and processed food can cause a deficiency of magnesium. It is impossible to maintain health without adequate magnesium levels. Inadequate magnesium levels lead to a poorly functioning immune and hormonal system. Magnesium is found in animal products, nuts and vegetables. Recommended dose: 400mg per day.

I recommend supplementing with 200-400mcg of selenium per day for those who have autoimmune thyroid disorders.
In a state of iodine deficiency, the thyroid gland (or any endocrine gland) will not function properly. For an autoimmune thyroid disorder, iodine deficiency can lead to a very unstable thyroid gland. This can cause and exacerbate many of the symptoms of hyper- or hypo-thyroidism. The RDA for iodine is insufficient to meet the thyroid gland's needs as well as the body's need for iodine. Iodine levels should be measured and appropriate supplementation begun in a deficient state. |
| If the levels of adrenal hormones are sub-optimal, strong consideration should be made for supplementing with physiologic (i.e., small) doses of adrenal hormones. In these cases, thyroid hormone should not be prescribed until the adrenal glands are properly supported.
Elaine, age 37, suffered from fibromyalgia for 10 years. She became ill after a viral infection. "1 remember it clearly. I thought I had the flu, but I never felt the same afterwards. I became increasingly fatigued and developed pain all over my body. I went to many doctors before I could get a diagnosis of fibromyalgia. |

Most people will benefit from supplementing their healthy diets with flaxseed oil, vitamins C and E, magnesium, trace minerals, and friendly bacteria, like Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus plantarum, following the guidelines presented in Chapters Six and Eight. Unless you are iron-deficient, avoid supplements that contain iron.
2. Get enough physical exercise. Commit yourself to thirty minutes a day of moderate- or high-intensity activity. Make exercise a family affair, or do it with a friend. Suggestions can be found on pages 170-72.
3. Explore meditation. |
| When supplementing your diet with EFAs, you'll usually need to take additional vitamin E. By increasing the generation of free radicals, EFA supplements taken without vitamin E may impair some important components of the immune response.74 Vitamin E at a dose of only two hundred milligrams per day reverses EFA-induced immune suppression, even in people taking high doses of fish oil.75 Combined treatment with vitamin E and fish oil is especially beneficial for the function of phagocytes. |
| They synthesize half a dozen vitamins, supplementing those obtained from food. They convert dietary fiber—that part of food which humans cannot digest—into small fatty acids that nourish the cells of the large intestine. They degrade dietary toxins like methylmercury, making them less harmful to the body. They crowd out pathogenic bacteria like Salmonella, decreasing the risk of food poisoning. They stimulate the development of a vigorous immune response. Four fifths of the body's immune system is located in the lining of the small intestine. |

While this may be true, supplementing oat bran with other fiber-rich foods creates an additive or synergistic effect on the body. As little as one to one and one-half cups of beans daily, with some oat bran, can lower cholesterol by sixty points. I personally favor oat bran and oat products, particularly since they are excellent sources of soluble fiber and in clinical studies demonstrated definite reduction in LDL levels in many people.
Wheat bran, on the other hand, has a less significant effect on cholesterol because it is an insoluble fiber. |

Most people in the United States and Europe are short on omega-three EFAs and will benefit from supplementing their meals with flax oil (one tablespoon a day). Because it spoils quickly, flax oil should be bought in small quantities, stored in the dark, and kept refrigerated; it should not be used for cooking. |

One way to enhance the health of the gastrointestinal tract is by supplementing it with "friendly bacteria." Regular use of friendly bacteria such as lactobacilli and bifidobacteria not only will improve digestive health, but also will protect against infections by fungi and other, less friendly bacteria. In addition, these bacteria can increase the absorption of calcium.
Increasing our body's supply of lactic bacteria is one important step toward optimum health. Lactic bacteria are single-cell organisms that may occur alone, in pairs, or in short chains. |

This transformation does not require abandoning Era I medicine but calls for supplementing, humanizing, and transcending it through Eras II and III.
In the previous chapters I have laid out some of the steps toward this goal. Now I want to focus on certain aspects of Era III that deal specifically with the timelessness of the mind. Unlike the temporal-based approaches of Eras I and II, this side of Era III rests not in time but in eternity. I therefore call it Eternity Medicine. |

| The safest way to raise DHEA levels is by supplementing with its precursor, the hormone pregnenolone.
Estrogen is a female sex hormone, produced mainly in the ovaries (some in the fat cells), which regulates the menstrual cycle. Estrogen is important for adolescent sexual development, prepares the uterus for receiving the fertilized egg by stimulating the uterine lining to grow, and affects all the body's cells; its levels decline after menopause. Estrogen slows bone loss, which leads to osteoporosis, and it can help reverse the incidence of heart attacks. |
| The safest way to raise DHEA levels is by supplementing with its precursor, the hormone pregnenolone. to the unsanitary practices in meat and poultry processing plants. Other than these exceptions, I advise that you "eat it raw."
Microwaving
Microwave ovens affect your health in two ways: by emitting electromagnetic radiation into your immediate environment, and by destroying not only the enzymes in food, but the nutritional value of the food itself. |

But even the smallest speck of matter visible to the naked eye contains trillions of atoms, each composed of many subatomic particles, and is continually interacting with the outside world; so it is quite infeasible to predict its behaviour particle by particle. By supplementing the exact laws of motion with various approximation schemes, we can predict some aspects of the gross behaviour of quite large objects - for instance, the temperature at which a given chemical compound will melt or boil. Much of basic chemistry has been reduced to physics in this way. |

An easy way of supplementing with this vitamin is to use halibut or cod liver oil capsules, up to 25,000 IU a day, during acute phases of infection. Vitamin A helps protect the mucous membrane lining of the bladder and urethra from irritation during infection. It also improves antibody response and white blood cell function. Just a word of warning here: if you are pregnant, do not supplement with these high doses of vitamin A, as it has been associated with birth defects. Beta carotene, with which the body can make vitamin A as it is needed, is a safer alternative.

| Women taking either of these should be supplementing their diet with folic acid, especially since this nutrient is difficult to get in foods."
Dr. Pat Gorman, an acupuncturist and educator in New York City, explains anemia and other blood disorders in women from an Asian perspective: "In women, blood has an actual cycle that rises and falls every month. There is a building phase that occurs for about a week after your period. Then there is a peak phase where the blood reaches its richest moment; that's the moment you ovulate. This is followed by a storage phase. |

But given the importance of EFAs in promoting healthy neural development, I am encouraging my patients who are pregnant or nursing to consider supplementing with at least 100 milligrams a day of DHA. It's certainly a topic that's worth raising with your healthcare provider.
EFAS AND ATTENTION-DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER
Behavior and learning disorders have become increasingly common in modern society. |
| In recent years, manufacturers of infant formulas (mostly in Europe) have begun supplementing their formulas with EFAs, particularly DHA and arachidonic acid (ARA). This may be especially important for preterm infants, who don't spend enough time in the womb to get sufficient amounts of EFAs. Also, preterm infants may not have developed the ability to convert alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and linoleic acid (LA) into other important compounds. Adding these EFAs to infant formula allows infants who aren't breastfed to get the DHA and ARA breast milk provides. |

This doesn't necessarily mean that supplementing with GLA will cure or prevent these diseases. In fact, some experts warn that GLA supplements have the potential to aggravate symptoms because GLA and DGLA can actually help promote inflammation.
"With GLA, an omega-6 fatty acid, the very strategy that you're using to help yourself might actually be putting gasoline on the fire, unless you balance it with an adequate intake of omega-3's," says William E. Lands, Ph.D., a long-time researcher in the field of essential fatty acid nutrition in Bethesda, Maryland. |

Reduction or disappearance of bone pains, muscle twitching, and an inclination to muscle cramping can all indicate the value of supplementing magnesium.
This important mineral also loosens the bowels. This can be a real blessing for those gluten-sensitive individuals who struggle with constipation, but it requires caution and careful attention from those who are inclined to diarrhea. |
| If we are gluten sensitive or have celiac disease, even if religiously pursuing a gluten-free diet, we may need to take aggressive action, supplementing magnesium and ensuring adequate vitamin D intake or absorption.
If you have a personal history of osteoporosis or osteopenia, periodic bone-density tests should be done to assure that your gluten-free diet and supplementation program are working optimally for you.
BACK TO THE FUTURE
Gluten and dairy products are two of the most allergenic foods in our food supply. |
| Collaboration with your doctor and regular testing are critical parts of your program for supplementing with this vitamin if you show signs of deficiency.
Vitamin E Supplementation
Vitamin E deficiency, perhaps in conjunction with selenium deficiency, may be associated with accelerated heart disease, strokes, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, diabetes, cataracts, and prostate cancer. One or more of the fat-soluble vitamins, vitamin E included, have been reported to be deficient in celiacs. However, caution is also important in taking vitamin E supplementation. |
| The good news is that these levels indicate deficiencies of folate, vitamin B6, and/or vitamin B12, which can often be remedied by supplementing a high-potency B complex. It may also be an indication of underlying celiac disease, known to cause such deficiencies. When one's homocysteine does not respond well to B vitamin supplementation, gluten sensitivity should be considered as a cause. For people with such deficiencies, a strict gluten-free diet might be just what the doctor ordered. |
