Gerson recommended supplementing stomach acid and pancreatic enzymes. There have been several claims that pancreatic enzymes can actually attack cancer cells and digest them. I find the evidence for this to be sketchy. It is hard to imagine such supplements doing harm, however, and there is a body of circumstantial evidence which suggests that they might do good. I took them while I was on Gerson's therapy but they were one of the first things I discontinued.

Recent studies have shown that supplementing the elderly with single nutrients or mixtures of vitamins and minerals at levels that exceed the RDAs significantly improves certain components of the immune response. Vitamins, minerals and immunity Vitamin and mineral supplementation can play an important role in the maintenance of normal immune function in the elderly. In a placebo-controlled 1994 study, researchers compared the effects of a vitamin and mineral supplement or placebo on immune responses of 56 people, aged from 59 to 85.

Post-Recovery Healing for Specific Addictions Specific addictions can leave particular kinds of damage in their wake, and you can give your body an added edge in healing the affected areas by supplementing with herbs and foods that have an affinity for those areas. For example, the liver is a focus of concern for recovering alcoholics; former smokers may want to accelerate and enhance the healing of lung tissue.

If such a defect exists, supplementing the diet with evening primrose, borage, or blackcurrant oil (commercial sources of gamma-linolenic acid) may prove helpful. In fact, several double-blind studies with evening primrose oil have shown benefit (studies with evening primrose oil showing benefit have typically used dosages of at least 3,000 mg of evening primrose oil daily, providing 270 mg of GLA).16-18 However, overall the results appear to more favorable with omega-3 oil supplementation than with evening primrose oil, and less expensive.

Those with Crohn's disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and ulcerative colitis should definitely consider supplementing with enzymes to help get their condition under control. Enzymes are helpful to prevent indigestion when eating a large meal or food that is hard to digest. (My occasional pizza binges are accompanied with enzymes.) °^ Food Sensitivities Supplements that improve digestion can help improve or eradicate food sensitivities. While avoiding the foods that may be causing a food-sensitivity reaction, you can also help the condition by taking enzymes.

For women with breast cancer, we believe that a case can be made either for supplementing or avoiding supplemental phytoestrogens and that the most prudent decision may be to do neither. Soy Is a joy to Your Heart Soybeans may help prevent cardiovascular disease. An FDA ruling in the year 2000 determined that foods containing 6.25 grams or more of soy protein can claim that, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, soy protein may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.
Asian women have consumed such food for thousands of years e believe that supplementing your diet with beans, whole grains, and flaxseed and other foods containing phytoestrogens is safe. and have a lower risk of breast cancer than Western women of all ages. What is not clear is whether the estrogenic properties of soybeans can cause breast cancer to grow. What's more, the effect of phytoestrogens may be different in premenopausal and postmenopausal women because of different "background" estrogen levels.
Four studies have looked at whether supplementing the diet with phytoestrogens resulted in estrogenic changes Food or Supplements? Soy foods have been a staple in Asian cuisine for thousands of years and can be presumed safe, at least for those raised on it. There is some interesting evidence that phytoestrogen consumption during puberty, when breasts develop, could be the most critical period for its intake. Beans are safe; the recent availability of purified isoflavone, mixed-phytoestrogen, or nonfood phytoestrogen pills like red clover, however, is worrisome.
Most but not all studies have shown that supplementing one's diet with phytoestrogens can help hot flashes and vaginal dryness. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 104 postmenopausal women found that 60 grams of isolated soy protein taken for twelve weeks reduced hot flashes by 45 percent. This compared with a 30 percent reduction in the placebo group treated with 60 grams a day of the milk protein casein,6 a statistically significant difference.

Additional new research suggests a greater need than ever for supplementing vegetarian/ macrobiotic diets with B12. II. CLAIMS Positive: 1) Energizes the body; 2) alleviates neuropsychiatric disorders and prevents mental deterioration; 3) protects against cancer, especially smoking-induced cancer; 4) protects against toxins and allergens; 5) needed to supplement vegetarian/macrobiotic diets. Negative: 1) Toxic and a waste of money. III.
Both are vital to energy production in the body, but, unfortunately, there is no evidence that supplementing with these substances has any energy-producing effect. Neither is there any evidence that these supplements are harmful except to the pocketbook. Wheat Germ/Wheat-Germ Oil/Octacosanol _ (Save Your Money) Many people consume wheat germ and the oil derived from it as sources of "natural" vitamin E and octacosanol. There is no persuasive evidence suggesting that vitamin E or any other substance derived from these sources is any more effective than vitamin E purchased in capsule form.

Clinical studies in diabetics have shown that supplementing the diet with chromium to decrease fasting glucose levels improves glucose tolerance, lowers insulin levels, and decreases total cholesterol and triglyceride levels, while increasing HDL cholesterol levels.19'20 Although some studies have not shown chromium to exert much effect in improving glucose tolerance in diabetes, there is no doubt that it is an important mineral in blood sugar metabolism. A recent large study clearly documented the benefit of chromium for NIDDM patients.

Supplementing with this mineral may reduce blood glucose by binding with GTF—glucose tolerance factor—which helps insulin bind to certain cell receptors to allow glucose to enter cells. Chromium may also improve tissue responsiveness to insulin. Scientific views on its effectiveness are mixed, but since chromium is not known to be toxic even at high levels, a daily supplement of the picolinate or nicotinate forms (designed to be more bioavailable, or easily absorbed) is a good idea.

In some clinical studies in diabetics, supplementing the diet with chromium has been shown to decrease fasting glucose levels, improve glucose tolerance, lower insulin levels, and decrease total cholesterol and triglyceride levels, while increasing HDL-cholesterol levels.43 Obviously chromium is a critical nutrient in diabetes, but it is also very important in hypoglycemia. In one study, eight female patients with hypoglycemia given 200 meg / day for 3 months demonstrated alleviation of their symptoms.

They are supplementing, enlarging, and exhorting your immune system to do the job with maximum efficiency. They make you "bigger"; they don't make the virus "smaller." That's why there are few drugs that work antivirally, and why we don't have a medical cure for the common cold. Drugs don't nourish you or your immune system. They don't make you a healthier or stronger match for the virus. Drugs either do the killing themselves, directly, or they salve symptoms. Many health experts predict a viral epidemic the likes of which we have never seen before—if it hasn't already arrived.
What I have always said about basic fueling also applies to eating, supplementing, and otherwise living in a manner fitting for your constitution: It is not necessary to be perfect. In fact, striving too hard for perfection can be adverse to health if it makes you miserable or discouraged, or if it means you're following a "program" instead of listening to yout body and being flexible about how you respond to it. What is important is knowing what works best and being consistent—not pristine ot compulsive—about working in an informed manner with what you've got.

L-glutamine can prevent many of the health problems associated with the administration of TPN to cancer patients, which can result in villous atrophy and a breakdown of the gut mucosal barrier, promoting translocation of gut bacteria into the bloodstream and lymph nodes. By supplementing TPN with glutamine, the gut mucosa can be protected from becoming too permeable, damaged, and leaky. Glutamine may be second only to glucose as a source of fuel for the body, but while glucose feeds tumor growth, glutamine does not.
Tannins include proanthocyanidins, anthocyanides, and gallic acid phenolics (this is what gives red wine some of its health benefits). When supplementing with PCOs or pycnogenol, be sure to get the real thing. Look for the name of the French researcher Jack Masquelier on the bottle. Another supplement that I often recommend is PCO Phytosome by Phyto Pharmica (see Resources).89 Flavonoids are being evaluated by themselves, and together with other substances, in the treatment of cancer.

One study demonstrated this by supplementing postmenopausal women with half the recommended amount of calcium and twice the recommended amount of magnesium. These women gained bone density at a rate sixteen time greater than women who simply had nutritional counseling with no supplements. Deficiencies of vitamin D can promote bone loss. Please note that if you're taking a good multiple vitamin, it may well contain 400 I.U. of vitamin D, and in that case there's no need to take more. In addition, the mineral boron seems to reduce the loss of calcium from the body.
Acidophilus capsules, which contain lactic acid bacteria similar to those used for fermenting yogurt, will also relieve the symptoms by supplementing the natural bacteria in your intestines. If you decide to stay away from all milk products, be sure you are getting enough calcium by eating foods such as sardines, salmon, tofu, broccoli, and kale. In addition, take a calcium supplement each day. Natural Prescription for Lactose Intolerance • Reduce your consumption of milk and milk products. • Try yogurt or lactose-reduced milk, but avoid acidophilus milk (which is not lactose-free).

To keep hormones in balance, supplementing the diet with vitamin B6 and evening primrose oil around the time of the menstrual period may help restore hormonal balance enough to forestall migraine attacks." migraines caused by cranial faults. These faults are extremely difficult to evaluate, due to the subtle movement of bones, but correcting them can be key to healing.
An easy way of supplementing with this vitamin is to use halibut or cod liver oil capsules, up to 25,000 IU a day, during acute phases of infection. Vitamin A helps protect the mucous membrane lining of the bladder and urethra from irritation during infection. It also improves antibody response and white blood cell function. Just a word of warning here: if you are pregnant, do not supplement with these high doses of vitamin A, as it has been associated with birth defects. Beta carotene, with which the body can make vitamin A as it is needed, is a safer alternative. zinc.
Women taking either of these should be supplementing their diet with folic acid, especially since this nutrient is difficult to get in foods." Dr. Pat Gorman, an acupuncturist and educator in New York City, explains anemia and other blood disorders in women from an Asian perspective: "In women, blood has an actual cycle that rises and falls every month. There is a building phase that occurs for about a week after your period. Then there is a peak phase where the blood reaches its richest moment; that's the moment you ovulate. This is followed by a storage phase.

They have found that supplementing cows' natural levels of BST improves their efficiency as milk producers. The mammary glands of such dairy cows take in more nutrients from the bloodstream and produce more milk. Introduced on the market in 1994, the producers of the hormone, the FDA, and some other experts claim that there is no difference in the milk of cows given the hormone since cow's milk naturally contains the hormone anyway. Consumer groups, some scientists, small farmers, and a number of dairy product producers are against the use of the hormone.

Since part of the neuropathy problem comes from the liver's inability to convert all of the pyridoxine to active P5P, this concern can be lessened by supplementing some of the B6 as pyridoxal-5-phosphate (as I have done in many of my programs), especially when the dose of vitamin B6 exceeds 200 mg. per day. In addition, using increased amounts of magnesium with the higher levels of vitamin B6 will reduce the occurrence of the peripheral neuritis. Deficiency, as usual, is a bigger concern with vitamin B6, as it is with all the B vitamins.

For patients with lupus, I suggest eating cold-water fish regularly and supplementing with fish oil. It may take six months to a year before there's any improvement, but sometimes the benefits can be dramatic. ^ Multiple Sclerosis Dr. Roy Swank, the doctor who developed a natural protocol for multiple sclerosis (MS), recommended fish oil as well as flaxseed oil. LDL-cholesterol by 7%, compared with controls also consuming a low-fat diet but not supplementing with psyllium. No significant effects were seen in this metaanalysis on either serum HDL-cholesterol or triacylglycerol concentrations. The proposed possible mechanism of action was increased fecal excretion of sodium taken up by the psyllium.
In one study, supplementing some of those who live in this area with molybdenum for prolonged periods did not lower the incidence of cancer, although supplementation with beta carotene, vitamin E and selenium did reduce the incidence of some cancers in this study group. In fact, a folic acid deficiency is associated with many types of cancer, and supplementing it has repeatedly been shown to reverse cervical dysplasia, a precancerous growth in the cervix. A small but pioneering study done some 10 years ago showed that supplementation with folic acid significantly decreased precancerous lung cells in smokers. Folic acid is a B vitamin found in fresh, leafy, dark green vegetables such as spinach and kale, turnips, endive, asparagus, wheat bran, yeasts and liver.
