These all make good, solid arguments as to why we should be supplementing our diets with high-quality nutritional supplements.
You must understand, however, that these are not the primary reasons I recommend the use of nutritional supplementation. Though these conditions have proven to be detrimental to our American health, our understanding of nutrition has been equally if not more harmful. We must rethink the meaning of RDAs—recommended daily allowances.
Optimal Levels Versus RDA Levels
First, you must understand how recommended daily allowances were developed in the first place. |

One study found that increasing nighttime melatonin levels by supplementing with 2 milligrams (mg) of melatonin led to a 240% increase in production of NK cells.11 Another study found that the amount of melatonin normally found in the bloodstream during sleep increased the ability of a certain phagocyte to destroy skin cancer cells by 73%.12
The immune-stimulating properties of sleep may explain why we feel like sleeping more when suffering from an infectious disease, such as a cold or flu. |

Melatonin: Your Body's Wonder Drug, recommends supplementing with calcium (1,000 mg), magnesium (500 mg), and niacinamide (100 mg) before bed, since these minerals are essential in converting tryptophan into serotonin and then melatonin.49
Starting to exercise is an important way to manage stress, which can interfere with sleep. Additionally, it can elevate your body temperature; the following drop in body temperature 4 to 6 hours later, may facilitate sleep.50 However, proper timing is crucial. The best time to exercise to improve your sleep is during the late afternoon (5 p.m. or earlier). |

Among the polyphenols in green tea, EGCG and ECG show the strongest effect in reducing collagenase activity. supplementing the diet with antioxidants, such as green tea's polyphenols, lessens the likelihood of wrinkles.7
Allergies that produce skin reactions are a common affliction, affecting 15 percent of the population. Although symptoms can manifest in many parts of the body; skin irritations, rashes, and swelling are common indications of allergic reactions. |
| Fortunately, research shows that supplementing the diet with antioxidants can boost immune function back to its "younger" capacity.10
LINKING GREEN TEA AND IMMUNITY
Green tea drinkers are less likely to be stricken with diseases caused by microorganisms for two reasons. First, green tea polyphenols boost the body's intrinsic defenses against disease (the immune system). Second, polyphenols interact with many microorganisms in such a way as to lessen their disease-causing potential. Yet another reason for tea's disease prevention powers may be strictly hygienic. |
| Recent research found that supplementing a person's diet with omega-3 fatty acids significantly reduces the risk of colon cancer.
ž Consume 20 to 30 Grams of Fiber Per Day
A diet high in fiber helps prevent cancer in several ways. First, fiber-rich foods are generally low in fat and calories and are loaded with other valuable nutrients. Second, fiber has been shown to bind with cancer-causing substances in the colon, shuttling them harmlessly out of the body. (Note that daily fiber intake should not exceed 35 grams. |

Nutritional medicine, supplementing our diet with vital antioxidant vitamins and minerals, is the only means we have to supercharge our body's natural defense and immune system.
Nutritional medicine protects our health by enhancing the natural defense systems God has created for a polluted world. When we provide the proper nutrients at the optimal levels that the body needs to function, it can do what God intended.
Once you understand the concept of oxidative stress and its deleterious effect on your body you will want to learn how to have victory over it. |
| Such clinical studies provide physicians with a strong rationale for supplementing their patients with cystic fibrosis with potent nutritional supplements and pancreatic enzymes. Supplementation can only help improve a patient's condition and hopefully slow down the progression of his or her disease.

Women who are menopausal and those who experience a heavy menstrual flow should consult their physicians about supplementing with iron.
Zinc
Zinc may be deficient in people suffering from insomnia, particularly infants. Vegetarians may be more likely to have a zinc deficiency because beans, legumes, and grains—often the staples of a vegetarian diet—are high phy-tates, substances that inhibit absorption of zinc (and other minerals).53 Food sources: Zinc is commonly added to animal feed, making meat one of the best sources of this mineral. |

These studies show the importance of supplementing amino acid precursors to raise serotonin and dopamine levels. The sublingual delivery system is easier to follow and more efficient with fewer side effects.
Study 1: Clinical Symptom Improvement Study
Forty-two clients were followed over five weeks while using neurotransmitter supplement lozenges. Participants completed a fifty-one-point questionnaire relating to common signs and symptoms of serotonin and dopamine deficiencies. We were especially interested in symptoms relating to their appetite, cravings, snacking, energy, and mood. |

ANTI-FUNCALS AND PROBIOTICS: A frequent observation in gut analysis of autistic children is a low presence of beneficial bacteria and high levels of harmful organisms such as yeast. supplementing the child's diet with probiotic formulas strengthens the good bacteria that are essential for proper digestion. According to the experience of DAN physicians, antibiotics should be avoided because they kill off the bacteria an autistic child needs.

A good enzyme supplement will not just substitute for the body in the digestive process. supplementing with digestive enzymes will decrease the need for all of the pancreatic enzyme secretions to be active in the digestive tract. This will allow some of the pancreatic enzymes to be absorbed into the blood, where they can work on that portion of food that enters the blood and lymphatic system undigested, helping to break it down. Pancreatic enzymes also enhance the immune system. |
| Chewable fiber wafer: Eating a couple of acacia-based chewable fiber wafers is a convenient option for supplementing your fiber intake when away from home. Ask your local health food store for help in finding these.
Clear fiber supplement: Consider adding another shaker to your kitchen table. Besides the salt and pepper shakers, you might want to keep a shaker full of an acacia fiber on hand. This clear, tasteless soluble fiber can be sprinkled on your food liberally to enhance the fiber content of your meals without altering the taste. Best of all, it contains no calories! |
| If you have trouble digesting certain foods, you may want to try supplementing your diet with some enzymes and see how it affects you. For example, if you tend to burp oils (say, after eating an oily fish like salmon), a supplement containing lipase with an enteric coating can greatly reduce this effect. Lipase is the enzyme needed for the proper digestion of fats. This enzyme is often added to fish oil capsules to help in the digestion of the oil.

| In the Nourish step of RENEW you will consider supplementing your diet with amino acids that can help you maintain adequate levels. Many reports show that people who supplement their diets with a combination of essential and nonessential amino acids experience measurable improvements in their detoxification capabilities.
Blood tests can help indicate how well your liver is functioning, especially if there is a question about liver disease, but unfortunately these tests cannot show the true extent of your liver's functional capacity. |
| If you suffer chronic digestive problems such as constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, and gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD), you would do well to consider supplementing your diet with digestive enzymes at each meal. These will help you further digest your food better and reduce the production of digestive by-products that can lead to intestinal toxicity. You'll learn more about digestive enzymes in Chapter 6. |

It's best to consume vitamin A from natural food sources rather than supplementing it, as vitamin A can be harmful if taken in excessive amounts in supplement form (vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin). You may also wish to consider taking beta carotene, which is a precursor to vitamin A and has none of the overdose concerns of vitamin A.

GEORGIA'S STORY
The way the Vitamin D Cure solves problems is abundantly clear in many people, and one great example that comes to mind is Georgia, a fifty-seven-year-old woman I first saw five years ago in my office at the Arthritis Institute of Michigan. At the time she was suffering from numerous health problems, including a history of migraine headaches, which had backed off somewhat since she'd gone through menopause. |

This metabolic pathway is very slow and is rate limited by the enzymes glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase. supplementing with ribose bypasses this slow and rate-limited pathway to accelerate ATP synthesis and salvage. the body uses to synthesize fatty acids and steroids used to make hormones, this pathway works most efficiently in tissues that produce these compounds. Such tissues are the liver, adrenal cortex, mammary tissue, and adipose tissue. |
| Unfortunately, the understanding of the metabolic role of energy in heart function is not well known by medical practitioners, and the impact of supplementing the heart with energy-supplying nutrients is not appreciated. Here is an example of how this lack of understanding caused one man unnecessary despair, as well as a delay in treatment.
Jim was seventy-six years old and living with congestive heart failure and ischemic heart disease. In 2003, his disease worsened to the point that he could hardly walk. |
| In diets that are becoming increasingly deficient in red meat, adding these important amino acids to carnitine supplements makes sense. supplementing with an amino-carnitine containing either of these amino acids helps the body with natural synthesis of carnitine. The literature also supports corresponding insufficiencies of other amino acids, including arginine.
Second, certain amino acids have direct physiological effects that work in concert with carnitine. Remember, arginine is an amino acid that dilates blood vessels (a vasodilator). |

Magnesium
The American Diabetes Association reports that 25 percent of diabetics are magnesium deficient (although other figures place this much higher), and that supplementing with this mineral can improve blood sugar control. Green vegetables such as spinach are good sources of magnesium, because the center of the chlorophyll molecule (which gives green vegetables their color) contains magnesium. Some legumes (beans and peas), nuts and seeds, and whole, unrefined grains are also good sources of magnesium. |

But as we know, endocrinologists successfully treat diseases of hormone insufficiency such as hypothyroidism and hypoadrenalism, both of which the author has seen very consistently in diabetes, as well as hypogonadism and somatotrophic deficiency of growth hormone treated by supplementing with hormones. In diseases of hypersecretion, we try to block the hormones. Thus treating hyperinsulinemia with more insulin doesn't have a lot of logic to it.
Hormone Disruption
Hormone disruptors may be another contributing factor in diabetes. |

Not only can these byproducts weaken the contraction of the heart and make you more vulnerable to irregular heartbeats, these toxic metabolites can eventually injure cardiac tissue. By supplementing with L-carnitine you can put a major dent in these scary processes and help your heart "keep the beat" energetically, as it was meant to.
But why are these toxic fatty acid compounds so disturbing to your heartbeat? Researchers believe they are so damaging because they disrupt cellular membranes, which in turn interrupt the stable environment for electrical transmission of impulses. |
