LEVODOPA (L-DOPA)
This medication is used to treat Parkinson's disease (PD). It contains two synthetic forms of the neurotransmitter dopamine (levodopa plus carbidopa), which declines dramatically in Parkinson's sufferers. |

When pharmaceuticals cause an accelerated loss of vitamins, minerals or other important nutrients, consumers can protect their health by either finding a natural way to end dependence on the pharmaceutical or by supplementing with the proper nutrients to avoid the inevitable onset of nutritional deficiency diseases. |

Until more is known, people with bipolat illness should avoid supplements containing vanadium and consider supplementing with vitamin C.
Inositol (page 537) is a nutrient found in large amounts in the brain, but its possible role in mood disorders is unclear. Inositol levels may be reduced in certain parts of the brains of depressed and bipolar patients.38 However, lithium reduces normal brain levels of inositol, and this may be one of the ways lithium helps people with bipolar disorder. |

Optimum Dose
The therapeutic dose ranges from 50 to 3000 mg daily, but the highest doses are very seldom used. Most doses are less than 100 mg daily, except for alcoholics when it will have to go as high as 500 mg. We have given 3 g per day with no difficulty and no side effects. It may be given by injection as well.
Safety
As Dr John Marks notes, "The only reaction found in humans is of the hypersensitivity type. |
| Three published reports have demonstrated dramatic improvements in symptoms of low stomach acid in three patients supplementing with optimal doses of niacin.
Food Sources: It is extremely important to ensure an adequate intake of B vitamins from food sources. Foods that contain high amounts of these B vitamins are brewer's yeast, wheat bran, sunflower seeds, soybeans, wild rice, turkey, and chicken. |

However, in a study of healthy untrained women undergoing an exercise program, supplementing with 5 grams of pyruvate twice a day had no effect on exercise performance.199 Studies of pyruvate supplementation on exercise performance in trained athletes have also failed to demonstrate any beneficial effect. Seven grams per day did not improve aerobic exercise performance in cyclists,200 and an average of 15 grams per day did not improve anaerobic performance or body composition in football players. |

I believe that these are the two most important and significant nutrients that you need to be supplementing your diet with. I believe that every single person is deficient in Vitamin E and deficient in calcium. I believe that these two specific deficiencies lead to a variety of illness, and by supplementing your diet with these two nutrients you can prevent virtually all illness and disease and cure yourself of most illness and disease. However, there is a big caveat to these statements. I say in my book do not take "vitamin supplements. |

Hydrogen sulfide in the cecum has been reduced fivefold by supplementing with zinc, a mineral blocked by the phytates in soy and in short supply anyway in many soy-eaters' diets.20
The question remains of why certain individuals experience stupendous amounts of gas even when eating soyfoods that are virtually devoid of Raf and Stach. Imbalances in gut flora caused by trypsin inhibitors—which inhibit protein digestion (see Chapter 16)—may be part of the problem, although undigested protein itself is not. |

The amino acid (page 465), glutamine (page 530), is needed for the synthesis of glutathione (page 531), an important antioxidant (page 467) within cells that is frequently depleted in people with HIV and AIDS.53 In well-nourished people, the body usually manufactures enough glutamine to prevent a deficiency. However, people with HIV or AIDS are often malnourished and may be deficient in glutamine. |

Supplementing identical-to-natural testosterone, done carefully, is often a major help in relieving heart failure."
"When you put it that way, it makes sense. But I don't want to grow a mustache!"
I laughed again. "You won't. First, there's a small amount of testosterone in women's bodies naturally, just as there's a small amount of estrogen in men's. Second, we'll be working with a balanced group of identical-to-natural hormones, not just testosterone. It's simply the most important hormone for strengthening the heart muscle. |

Researchers have found that this uncommon side effect of L-carnitine can be prevented by supplementing with riboflavin. Although no serious side effects were seen in this study, the safety of long-term L-carnitine supplementation in children has not been well studied. This treatment should, therefore, be monitored by a physician.

Healthcare Crisis
Public healthcare programs have not been able to keep up with the costs of the consequences of this kind of malnutrition. Since the 1950s, there has been a real increase in the number of people who become sick, despite the ever-increasing amount of money spent to make them well. Today, every second Canadian has one or more degenerative disease. |

Non-essential Toxic Minerals
Six metals are toxic - aluminum, mercury, cadmium, silver, gold, and lead. Aluminum is present in our food, in drinking water, in cooking utensils, in cosmetics, and in preservatives. Mercury is present in our water and food
(especially in certain fish), and along with silver and gold is used in dental amalgams. Cadmium is present in the air around tires that are being worn down by use. |

Furthermore, supplementing melatonin can restore normal leptin rhythm.410
An animal study showed that melatonin prevents the accumulation of stomach fat and lowers leptin, independent of the diet.411 Melatonin improves diabetes in animal studies by eliminating insulin resistance.412
It is interesting to note that scientists are demonstrating that low leptin levels in the brain, whether due to leptin resistance or the starvation metabolic pattern, are the actual cause of most hypothyroid problems. We will discuss this in detail in chapter 39. |

In many cases children with ADD, ADHD, or autism have cleared these conditions completely just by going off pseudofoods and the common food allergens, and supplementing their diets with cod liver oil or flax oil. Similarly, people who have chronic sinus or bronchial congestion have cut out wheat and dairy products, the two most notorious mucous-producing foods, and are now able to breathe freely. Sugar, soy, and oranges are also known to produce mucous and should therefore be avoided by people who are congested as well. |

There's a persistent urban legend about the connection between vitamin C and kidney stones, and many people are still afraid to take vitamin C because of it. Don't be. There's not a shred of evidence that vitamin C increases actual stone formation. In fact, vitamin C will bind up calcium, which may decrease the formation of calcium oxalate. And because vitamin C is a powerful infection fighter it may help break up bacteria that usually forms around a "nucleus of infection," which eventually leads to a stone. |

The importance of supplementing one's diet with appropriate antioxidants cannot be overemphasized. There are several reasons for this. First, it is difficult, if not impossible, to get the optimal level of antioxidants through food alone. Also, as we age, our ability to synthesize antioxidant enzymes within the body diminishes markedly, as do the various hormonal markers of aging. |

If you have elevated LDL or total cholesterol, consider supplementing with 400 to 800 IU. With higher cholesterol levels, your vitamin E levels increase because you need more relative to the greater amount of cholesterol. Also, if you have made a habit of eating a lot of fried foods (burgers, fried chicken, french fries), the extra vitamin E will help reduce oxidation from the consumption of fried oils. Supplemental vitamin C (1,000 mg) daily will also be beneficial.
