| Specific eye problems that can be helped by supplementing the diet with vitamins and other nutrients are discussed in this section.
Unless otherwise specified, the nutrient dosages given in the tables within this section are for adults. For a child between the ages of twelve and seventeen, reduce the dose to three-quarters of the recommended amount. For a child between six and twelve, use one-half of the recommended dose, and for a child under the age of six, use one-quarter of the recommended amount. |

Normally, I do not advise supplementing with glutamine because in the brain it is also converted to glutamic acid, where it can contribute to excitotoxicity, but because of the severity of the leaky gut problem, a short-term course of glutamine is less dangerous than the problems associated with this disorder.
Glutamine also has been shown to lengthen intestinal villi, thicken mucosa, and increase IgA secretion. In cases of radiation and chemotherapy injury, glutamine has produced significant improvement in gut healing. |

Natural estrogen helped control her appetite and lose weight. supplementing her estrogen was a good idea for her menopausal symptoms (dry vagina, low sex drive, and low mood) and for helping her control her appetite and lose weight, but using Premarin wasn't. I replaced that prescription with 0.5 mg. of estradiol—bioiden-tical estrogen—and combined it with 100 mg. of progesterone and a small amount (2.5 mg.) of testosterone, a combination known as PET. |

Supplementing the diet with magnesium can help prevent depression, dizziness, muscle weakness and twitching, and premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and also aids in maintaining the body's proper pH balance and normal body temperature.
Magnesium is necessary to prevent the calcification of soft tissue. This essential mineral protects the arterial linings from stress caused by sudden blood pressure changes, and plays a role in the formation of bone and in carbohydrate and mineral metabolism. |

They simply don't know enough about them, don't have the time to educate themselves properly, and don't want to be in the legal-liability loop for any negative side effect or drug interaction with the drugs they do prescribe and the many herbal supplements available to patients today. |

One study with rats given a stem-bark extract intragastrically (at 100 mg/kg) reported an increase in dopamine, norepinephrine, and monomine oxidase activity, as well as an inhibition of serotonin release in stress-induced rats.39
Alcohol extracts of graviola leaf showed no toxicity or side effects in mice at 100 mg/kg; however, at a dosage of 300 mg/kg, a reduction in explorative behavior and mild abdominal constrictions were observed.40 If sedation or sleepiness occurs, reduce the amount used. |

| Since the chromium-niacin combination found in chromium-enriched brewer's yeast may affect blood glucose and insulin levels, people with diabetes or hypoglycemia should consult their doctors before supplementing their diets with these forms of brewer's yeast.
Some people may be allergic to brewer's yeast. In a study using an elimination diet to treat sixty migraine patients, brewer's yeast was found to be one of the foods likely to contribute to the initiation of a migraine.
Brewer's yeast is not related to Candida albicans, the typical culprit in vaginal yeast infections in women. |
| In addition to regular daily consumption of lA to Vi cup of raw nuts and seeds, supplementing the diet with selenium (100 to 200 microgram per day) and vitamin E (200 to 400 IU per day) appears indicated.
Brewer's yeast may also be of benefit in healing acne. In one double-blind study, in more than 80 percent of the patients given brewer's yeast, the acne was either completely healed or considerably improved after 5 months of use, while the corresponding figure among those receiving a placebo was only 26 percent. |

Chromium polynicotinate, chromium picolinate, and chromium-enriched yeast are suitable forms for supplementing the diet. vitamin c Since the transport of vitamin C into cells is enhanced by insulin,13 many people with diabetes suffer from a relative deficiency of vitamin C inside their cells even if they consume an adequate amount of vitamin C in their diet. As a result, people with diabetes need to take extra vitamin C.
In addition to its role as an antioxidant, vitamin C is required in immune functions and the manufacture of collagen, the main protein substance of the human body. |
| As well, supplementing the diet with water-soluble fiber supplements such as those made from PGX?(discussed on pages 154?87) will bring about a profound sense of satiety (fullness) with very little contribution to daily calories. In fact, research at the University of Toronto's Risk Factor Modification Centre has shown that PGX?given at higher doses effectively removes all hunger to the point where very few calories can be eaten in a day with little or no hunger at all. |
| It would mean that by "playing it safe" and not supplementing niacinamide, many individuals who may have benefited would not have the opportunity, just like the thousands of children born with neural tube defects that could have been prevented with folic acid supplementation.

The plant pterocarpus has a long history of use in India as a treatment for diabetes. |
| There are countless examples where supplementing the diet with an inexpensive vitamin or mineral can provide significant preventive or therapeutic effects, yet many physicians place an unnecessary burden of proof before they feel inclined to make the recommendation. Our message to these physicians is to rethink their position.
Instead of waiting for absolute proof, physicians should ask whether there is enough "reasonable certainty" that a particular recommendation may be beneficial. What do we mean by reasonable certainty? Basically, does the recommendation make sense? |

It also often works better than mainstream medicine for many of the predominant disease of post-industrial cultures, such as autoimmune conditions and cancer.43 Epigenetics gives us tools to understand why our health can be affected by so many different healing modalities.
We are comfortable with incremental exploration. Yet many changes are not incremental, but very sudden. The expansion of a balloon as air is injected is smooth and incremental. A balloon popping is sudden and discontinuous. Water heated in a kettle shows little change. |

Since flavonoids are so important to the prevention of the complications of diabetes, we also encourage supplementing your diet with flavonoid-rich extracts (discussed in Chapter 11, pages 249-251).

Supplementing the diet with this vitamin enhances the bone-building process by attracting calcium to the bone. Supplemental vitamin K also reduces the amount of calcium in the urine and frees up more calcium to be used by the bone-building process.
Cautions
Do not take large doses of synthetic vitamin K during the last few weeks of pregnancy. It can result in a toxic reaction in the newborn. If you are taking anticoagulant (blood-thinning) drugs, consult with your health care provider before taking any supplemental vitamin K, as it can interfere with the action of these medications. |

The survival rate of very preterm, low birth weight infants (weighing less than 1500 g) is 85 per cent in the USA and is ever increasing, while 42 to 75 per cent of extremely premature infants (weighing 751-1000 g) survive. Of great concern is the lack of consistent decrease in neurological syndromes and associated visual impairments. Because of short gestations, these infants have not had time to accrue up to 80 per cent of magnesium normally present at term. |

If you're a vegetarian, it's a virtual certainty that you should be supplementing with carnitine, especially if you're trying to lose weight. If your main source of protein is soy, be aware that unless it's fortified, it's lacking in methionine, one of the two amino acids from which the body makes its own carnitine.
• Carnitine lowers Cortisol levels (and can therefore be helpful for
74 adrenal health), and adrenal activity affects weight gain and loss.
Carnitine alone cannot promote weight loss. |

Supplementing the diet with PABA may restore gray hair to its original color if the graying was caused by stress or a nutritional deficiency. Other benefits of PABA include protection against secondhand smoke, ozone, and other air pollutants; reduced inflammation in arthritis; and enhanced flexibility.
A deficiency of PABA may lead to depression, fatigue, gastrointestinal disorders, graying of the hair, irritability nervousness, and patchy areas of white skin.
Sources
Foods that contain PABA include kidney, liver, molasses, mushrooms, spinach, and whole grains. |

If stress or depression contribute to your weight issues, you should definitely be supplementing with vitamin C, 1,000 to 2,000 milligrams per day.
Vitamin E
33-35
Vitamin E has a demonstrable effect on insulin resistance. According to diabetes expert Dr. Richard Bernstein, vitamin E in dosages of up to 1,200 IUs a day has also been shown to reduce glycosylation, one of the most destructive and aging effects of high blood sugar (see chapter 2 and "Alpha Lipoic Acid" below). Bernstein recommends 400 to 1,200 IUs a day to many of his patients. |

The recommendation for supplementing with vitamin D3 has been set at 400 IU a day because of worries that a person could get too much. Vitamin D in excess is toxic, so taking more than 2,000 IU a day would be foolish. Most people don't need a lot more than 1,000 IU daily, but that seems to be a more sensible level to aim for than the currently sanctioned 400 IU. That is especially true for older people at risk for osteoporosis, who may be avoiding sun exposure for fear of skin cancer. |

Birth control pills deplete the body of B6, and supplementing can help relieve the depression that sometimes accompanies use of birth control pills. This may be because, for both women and men, B6 is necessary to convert tryptophan into serotonin, as well as for the synthesis of dopamine and norepinephrine, all neurotransmitters that affect weight and appetite. Remember that low serotonin states are almost always associated with carbohydrate cravings. |

NUTRITIONAL HIGHLIGHTS
Delectable yet a dieter's friend, each leaf of Belgian endive contains only one calorie. Belgian endive is an excellent source of vitamin A and a good source of fiber and vitamin C. A 3'/2-ounce (100 gram) serving provides 17 calories, mostly as carbohydrate and fiber.
HEALTH BENEFITS
Belgian endive has a 95 percent water content and a very low calorie content of 7.5 calories per cup. It is an excellent source of carotenes. |

During gluconeogenesis, B6 levels are depleted from muscle, another reason for supplementing with B6 while on a low-carb diet. As with B5, I recommend that if you do supplement with B6, you take it at a different time than you take your B complex vitamin. A good amount is 50 milligrams once a day, as long as you are also taking your B complex.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C basically helps almost everything. When you have high blood sugar, vitamin C can't travel into the cells. While by itself vitamin C probably does not promote weight loss, it is depleted by stress—understand-

| This has led many clinicians, myself included, to favor supplementing with fish oil—since it contains ready-made EPA and DHA—and to just forget about the "parent molecule" of ALA found in flaxseed oil. Others—like Ann Louise Gittleman, author of The Fat Flush Plan—argue that even though only a small percentage of ALA actually gets transformed successfully into EPA and DHA, ALA has valuable properties of its own (including anti-inflammatory ones) and for that reason should be used in conjunction with fish oil. |

You may have sensitivities to some of the foods you are eating—a good game plan would then be to cut out all the usual suspects (especially wheat, dairy, and sugar) and see if the scale begins to move. Maybe you're sensitive to some of the sugar alcohols found in those low-carb protein bars—they've been known to stall weight loss in some people. |

If a person with periodontitis is not receiving a satisfactory quantity of calcium from his or her food intake, supplementing with calcium is a good idea. Periodontitis is frequently accompanied by blood sugar problems like hypoglycemia or diabetes, which make it more difficult for the person to effectively combat infections. Often these particular people, especially those who suffer from low blood sugar levels, will benefit by supplementing their diets with zinc, manganese, and magnesium. Magnesium and calcium are both crucial to the bones that provide the foundation for the teeth. |

Gawler observes:
Here again the idea of supplementing the digestive functions is medically questionable. I find this easier to put forward [than recommendations for nutritional supplements] as there is little doubt that most cancer patients initially do have an impaired digestion. Gerson recommended supplementing stomach acid and pancreatic enzymes. There have been several claims that pancreatic enzymes can actually attack cancer cells and digest them. I find the evidence for this to be sketchy. |
