| Nutrients That Can Help
Some physicians have become receptive to nutritional therapies because vitamin supplements relieved or eliminated their own allergies. For example, Robert Cathcart III, M.D., was impressed by how vitamin C supplements relieved his hay fever, and he went on to become one of the leading experts in the clinical use of vitamin C to fight infections.
A large variety of nutritional supplements might help, but you will have to experiment to find the best combination for your particular body and allergies. |

| Of course, the drug companies can't make nearly as much money selling B vitamin supplements as they can make selling statins, so we don't anticipate any major shift from the focus on cholesterol control anytime soon.)
Here are a few examples of the latest studies on the homocysteine-heart disease link:
• In one study, 131 subjects—each with one blocked coronary artery—were compared with about the same number of control subjects who were free of heart disease. |

The term is typically used when referring to vitamin supplements that offer a nutrient in excessive amounts, making the nutrient more like a drug and thus bringing on druglike side effects.

Use appropriate mineral and vitamin supplements, laxative foods, colonics, acupressure, and exercise to improve bowel conditions (see steps 3 and 4).
Ordinary toilets encourage a sitting rather than a squatting position. However, this posture is not conducive to the complete emptying of the large intestines. A squatting position is preferable. If you cannot squat on top of the toilet, support your feet with a footstool; additionally, bend forward to exert more pressure on the bowels (for further information, see www.naturesplatform. com). |
| Selection of Vitamin Supplements: Commercial growing and processing and traditional Western cooking methods usually reduce the vitamin and mineral content of foods to only a fraction of that found in fresh, raw, organically grown foods. As an example, methyl bromide, a widely used fumigant for grains, destroys all the pantothenic acid (a B vitamin) in cereal grains. |
| Store vitamin supplements in a dry, cool, and dark place. Oil-filled capsules should be taken during a meal containing oily or fatty foods and lecithin. However, many individuals most in need of these vitamins have absorption problems and for them oil-filled capsules are not suitable. Therefore, I generally recommend using tablets of natural vitamin E rather than oil-filled capsules. If in doubt about your digestive abilities, take a halibut oil or other fish oil as a capsule at bedtime and keep it in the mouth to be slowly absorbed overnight. |

The Life Extension Foundation uncovered a flaw in the theory that a person can blindly take vitamin supplements to adequately reduce homocysteine levels. While folic acid, vitamin B^, vitamin Bg, and tri-methylglycine (TMG) all lower homocysteine levels, it is impossible for any individual to know if they are taking the proper amount of nutrients unless they have a homocysteine blood test.
The clear message from new scientific findings is that there is no safe "normal range" for homocysteine. |

Brewer's yeast tablets or powder are far less efficient ways of taking B vitamins than B complex vitamin supplements with a little added yeast—one would have to eat pounds of yeast tablets to get optimum levels of B vitamins. However, some people are allergic to yeast, and if you react badly to any supplements, it could be yeast that is the problem. For this reason, many supplements are yeast free.
There are many other potentially helpful substances that may be provided with nutrients in a complex. |

| You would need to eat huge quantities of fresh, organic produce to get the vitamins and minerals present in a few vitamin supplements. For example, you'd have to drink eight glasses of fresh-squeezed orange juice every day in order to get just 1,000 mg of vitamin C.
The Basic Plan
Here's the basic program: A high-potency multiple vitamin with minerals (minerals also enable your body to use the vitamins). Be sure to read the label. With many multivitamins you need to take up to 12 a day to get the amounts listed below. |

Studies show that children who take vitamin supplements also tend to perform better on intelligence tests. The appropriate amount and type of supplements will vary, depending on your child's weight and age; discuss this with your child's health-care provider.
In this chapter, we will look at a number of nutritional concerns that are of special relevance for children.

In the 1970s the FDA attempted to make vitamin supplements prescription drugs. The FDA claimed that vitamins are so dangerous they should be prescribed only by doctors. The public was outraged and Congress rejected the idea. In 1993 the FDA tried to classify certain minerals and amino acids as prescription drugs. Again, a public outcry caused Congress to act. Recently the FDA has been going after companies that sell natural remedies via the Internet. It claims these companies are selling "drugs" without a license. |
| The reason I say that is because almost all vitamin supplements sold are sold by companies who, just like the drug companies, are only in it for the money. They are selling you vitamins and minerals that are nothing more than dirt and do little, if any, good. They are usually synthetic man-made vitamins that are not in their natural form. I have talked to the presidents of major vitamin and mineral manufacturing companies and these people, unfortunately, are just as greedy and ruthless as the presidents of the pharmaceutical companies. They are in it only for the money. |

Day 3
This is a liquid day. Breakfast
Immediately upon rising, drink a glass of steam-distilled water to flush your kidneys. The juice of a fresh lemon may be added for additional cleansing.
Use a coffee or wheatgrass retention enema. (See page 27.) It is a good idea to alternate between coffee and wheat-grass retention enemas.
Drink a glass of grapefruit juice or Lemon Quality Water with 2 tablespoons of pure cold-processed olive oil added. This aids in cleansing and healing the gallbladder. |

It can also cause an overactivity of the parathyroid glands. vitamin supplements can protect us from these dangers: In addition to PABA and other B vitamins, we need plenty of antioxidants, bioflavonoids, and carotenoids for sun protection. Except for zinc cream or a solution of PABA, I am not in favor of using sunscreen lotions; instead, use suitable clothing for protection. Sunscreens contain unbio-logical chemicals, and it has been reported that most commercial sunscreens kill skin cells and so may inflict long-term skin damage. |

| Do's and don'ts of supplement-taking
Very few problems occur with vitamin supplements, but it is sensible to be aware of the following:
• Vitamin A (retinol) in doses in excess of 8,250 IU should not be taken by pregnant women or women trying to conceive. Check that the total provided by all your supplements (for example, a multivitamin or antioxidant complex) does not exceed this level.
• Beta-carotene in excess makes your skin go very yellow. If you have excessively yellowing skin, check your beta-carotene intake from food and supplements. |

Dorothy credits her long-term survival to "quality" vitamin supplements, a good diet, and a great attitude toward life.
For many years Dorothy took large amounts of vitamin A to reduce the risk of metastasis. However, the cancer did metastasize to her lungs in 1995, but it receded after drug treatment.
In 1997 she consulted with Hoffer, and she has since been taking a high-powered assortment of nutritional supplements, including vitamins A, C, D, and E, beta-carotene, selenium, and the vitaminlike coenzyme Q10. "I do feel I need these extra supplements," Dorothy says. |

| Since then there has been a massive effort on the part of many doctors, dietitians, professors of biochemistry, and others to educate people against taking vitamin supplements because the average diet provided all that was needed. They linked vitamin C to every possible toxicity. Yet the public has its own way of dealing with medical ideas. It goes by how it feels. When a patient finds that he gets fewer colds after taking vitamin C, no amount of rhetoric will persuade him that his own convictions are unscientific. |

If you followed the Cancer-Busting Regimen and lived in an ideal world then you would not need vitamin supplements. Unfortunately, in today's world no one lives pollution-free, and many of us are relying on a Western diet low in cancer-curbing agents. When in doubt, take vitamin supplements.
After all, vitamins are essential nutrients. Without them disease and premature death can occur. Using vitamins is a major anticancer defense.

All one-a-day vitamin supplements are now composed in such a way that the daily requirements of the essential minerals—other than sodium, calcium, and potassium—are provided. The rest of the vital minerals are fully available in the variety of foods we eat. Vitamin and mineral supplements are thus recommended for insurance in case your daily diet is not high quality and contains insufficient fruits and vegetables.
The toxic mineral elements are mercury, lead, aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, and, in large quantities, iron. |

| People taking vitamin supplements think they are being protected against the lethal effects of homocysteine when, in reality, even supplement users can have homocysteine levels far above the safe level of 6.3.
Elevated homocysteine can be controlled in two ways. The most common is via the remethylation (or detoxification) process, whereby methyl groups are donated to homocysteine to transform it into methionine and S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe).
Trimethylglycine (TMG) is a potent remethylation agent. |
| Since it's not made in the body, lutein must be obtained from food or vitamin supplements.
This substance is important to all of us because it helps maintain eye health. Research shows that people with diets rich in lutein and zeaxanthin are at a lower risk for degeneration of the macula, which is a part of the retina. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in older adults.
Leafy green kale is a fine source of lutein. Other sources include spinach, broccoli, romaine lettuce, tomatoes, oranges and orange juice, carrots, and celery.

She was taking more than two dozen different herbal and vitamin supplements, followed a sensible diet, exercised religiously, and corrected other metabolic problems. Nonetheless, she had daily episodes of diarrhea that resisted every remedy. I had her cut out all but the most essential of her dozens of daily pills and gave her a simple vilwa fruit prescription—4 500-mg capsules three times per day of the concentrated powder. After 2 weeks, the frequency of her diarrhea episodes decreased to every other day. |

Similarly, the naive notion that vitamin supplements can replace fruits and vegetables has given way to a new appreciation for the treasure trove of nutrients these wholesome foods contain, including antioxidants that are not vitamins, folate, and cancer-fighting nutrients called "phytochemicals." This book translates these new findings into a simple, delicious dietary plan that will greatly increase your chances of living a long, lean, and healthy life.
One of the main conclusions to come from the medical labs is that you don't have to give up fat to lose weight or enjoy better health. |
| The fact that the phytochemicals in fruits and vegetables are potent anticancer agents helps explain why cancer studies involving vitamin supplements have had such lackluster results: The pills contain only a fraction of what the plants have to offer. Until researchers can identify and encapsulate all the myriad healing substances found in plants, it is far wiser to eat the whole foods themselves. This way, you will be getting all their known cancer-fighting nutrients—plus all those yet to be identified. |
| If not, take antioxidant and vitamin supplements. If you are taking fish oil or flaxseed oil supplements, I recommend that you also take at least 100 IU of vitamin E each day. Pregnant women and nursing mothers should take the nutritional supplements prescribed by their doctors.
If you are a vegetarian, you will be replacing the meat with vegetable protein, something you know how to do already. Since there are relatively small amounts of meat in this diet, you may find this easier to do than with some other programs. But make sure that you are eating an adequate supply of omega-3 fatty acids. |
